Had an incredible experience speaking to aspiring law students from The Lex Fellowship last week! The fellows have the opportunity to rotate through different law firms and practice areas, meeting lawyers and learning about real-life cases. I shared my path, day-to-day work, and even discussed an employment matter I handled for a client. It's always a bit nerve-wracking wondering if I'm giving good advice! Court relief ends today and the bench is not sitting. What to do? These are common litigation scenario where the bench that gave you relief, on that day is not sitting, or the bench composition has changed or the assignment of cases has changed for the bench. In such cases, where that particular bench is not sitting there must be a court notice in the high court website about ‘alternate bench’ which can have urgent mentioning and your relief can be extended. If the bench composition has changed or assignment of cases have changed, we can see the current assignment of judges in the ‘sitting list’ section of high court website and accordingly mention the case before appropriate bench to get the relief extended. If biglaw firms are changing their recruiting schedules and going onto law school campuses to hire students earlier in the year for summer positions and full-time positions, WHAT are they basing their decisions on? These schools certainly are not basing their decisions on law school performance! Certainly are not basing their decisions on whether a student is on law review or graduates summa cum laude or first in their class. The firms say that they are relying more on which students reach out to them to apply directly as opposed to the students who "sign up to see them" during OCI...claiming the latter are usually less qualified. Says who? And based on what? This whole thing smells. And as a recruiter who places associates from their 2nd year on, how am I to assure the NEXT law firm of the quality of an associate who was hired by firm one on subjective rather than objective terms. #lawstudenthiring #OCI

Two tricks for litigation interns to learn filing quickly- 1) Learn the art of filing cases perfectly. A good clerk may teach you required skills. Having some earlier draft where work is done perfectly can be crucial. What grounds, averments, prayers to put and where can be understood easily. 2) Building good relations with court staff. After filing, objections may come up. There are two types of objections i) something that is genuinely missing. For example, certain pleadings or amendments not made. They’ll have to be put. ii) Small errors which can be ignored or correctly immediately.
