Is the on-demand model feasible for the fashion industry? Overproduction is a pressing issue in the fashion industry, with brands often having as much as 20-30% unsold inventory due to the challenges of predicting demand months in advance. If brands could produce only what they sell through a made-to-order model, overproduction would be highly reduced. Scaling such a model has been proven difficult, as customers might have to wait months to receive their products. However, in a Vogue article, a Danish company called Rodinia explains why it might have the answer. 🦾 By automating the printing, curation, and cutting process through machines, without using water or chemicals, the micro-factory enables rapid low-impact on-demand products of smaller quantities. 💡 How will it reduce overproduction? Low minimum order requirements and short lead times (as little as 48H). This makes it possible for brands to respond quickly to customer demand, instead of predicting months in advance. 💵 Since the whole process of making the clothes up until the sewing is automated by machines, costs can also be heavily cut. Moreover, hidden costs like imports and warehousing would be reduced. ♻️ While the model is still mostly used for smaller brands, the real value lies in scaling the model, where it can have a major impact. What do you think, is made-to-order through micro factories the future solution to fashion’s overproduction problem? 👇 #circularfashion #fashiontech #vogue

Being new in the textile industry can feel intimidating. 😳 Introduction rounds often go like this: “20 years in fashion“, „spent my whole life with textiles“, „been everywhere in the value chain“. Do you need to have worked in an industry for your whole career to introduce change❓ I work with experts and soak up every bit of learning I can get from the amazing recycling and textiles superstars I meet in my job. There’s one thing though that was central in digital industries and that I haven’t heard a lot about recently: CUSTOMER CENTRICITY When visiting textile fairs I see new colors and fabrics, in stores I see collections that come in 5 sizes meant to fit all humans. Is knowledge from usage, non-usage, re-usage (by whom? where?), repair, customer feedback — “it’s (un-)comfortable/it makes me feel confident/pretty/I needed to shorten it” — applied in new designs? I don’t recall ever being interviewed about my clothing habits or what I think can be improved with my favorite jeans brand. With so much of digital technology out there, we’ll hopefully see change - and badly fitting, single-use plastic clothes become a memory of the past. 👻 Picture by DALL-E 2 “the perfect dress”
