Ontario is dipping its toe into carbon capture and storage. This article summarizes how Ontario is beginning to develop a regulatory framework for carbon storage. While there is still considerable regulatory uncertainly (most notably the lack of clarity of pore space ownership), it is making it easier to pursue CCUS projects. Alberta is the Canadian leader in this space and I encourage Canada's second highest emitter of GHGs to look at our regulatory framework for a sensible path forward. #ccus #publicpolicy #ontario #carbon #carboncapture

President Cyril Ramaphosa has recently announced the formation of the Climate Change Response Fund. The fund is aimed at mobilizing public and private financing to climate-proof existing essential infrastructure. In his weekly newsletter, the President provided additional background on this new fund. The Climate Change Response Fund aims to address the effects of climate change on existing infrastructure, which can cause significant damage and disruption. By mobilizing public and private funding, the fund can help ensure that critical infrastructure is more resilient and better able to withstand the impacts of climate change. This new fund is a crucial step towards addressing the challenges of climate change in South Africa. An important part of BSEE’s responsibilities is to ensure that infrastructure used in exploration, development, and production activities on the OCS are properly decommissioned to provide long-term protection of the resources and the surrounding environment. “The investment announced yesterday under the president’s Investing in America agenda will provide BSEE with critical funding to help address and remedy orphaned infrastructure in the Gulf of Mexico’s West Delta and High Island areas. This infusion of funding makes the Outer Continental Shelf safer and cleaner and helps BSEE make certain that infrastructure used in exploration, development, and production activities is properly decommissioned.” BSEE’s regulatory authority for OCS decommissioning is provided by 30 CFR 250, Subpart Q, Decommissioning Activities.
