The biggest one yet? Perhaps not—but guaranteed there’s never been a Heli-Expo as widely ranging. It’s part of the reason the 70-yr-plus old organization went through a serious rebranding, to Vertical Aviation International, to encompass all types of vertical lift. Now that VTOLs (electric and otherwise) claw towards certification, VAI feels like a necessary pivot for an association that used to wear “helicopter” in its title and DNA. My other key takeaways? 1. This is a big-money show. It now approaches NBAA’s annual BACE in size and spend. Record crowds hovered into the last Heli-Expo (the 35th, before its rebranding to Verticon next year in 2025), bringing the total to 15,000. Last year’s BACE in Vegas hosted 20,000. For folks focused on fixed-wing lift, the numbers may surprise you—but they make sense to anyone watching this space take off. 2. Women now take on more visible roles, since Karen Gebhart’s leadership a few years back. Now we have the dynamite Nicole Battjes serving as chairman of VAI’s board of directors this year. We caught up at lunch on day two, and her company, Rainbow Helicopters, plans significant growth in the years to come—even as the team garnered well deserved recognition for its efforts following the Lahaina fires. 3. State of the art lift still centers on traditional rotorcraft designs, like the upcoming Bell 525, and the Leonardo AW09, both coming into TC later this year, perhaps. Fly-by-wire and envelope protection rule the immediate future, as these protocols enter maturity ahead of their incorporation into eVTOLs. 4. Powerplants evolve too—witnessed by Safran, Airbus, GE, and Pratt & Whitney with carbon-based thrust as well as each OEM’s forays into electric, hybrid, and hydrogen power. First impressions of ILA Berlin - Pioneering Aerospace 2024 What a DIFFERENCE to #ParisAirShow 2023! 1. Remote province vs. bustling capital Paris Actually… there are benefits to being in the “German Pampa” (ILA is located in Brandenburg, not in Berlin). For instance, the hotel room – at exactly(!) the same price – felt 8 times larger than that in Paris ;-) More importantly, German Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs & Climate Robert Habeck ran into us within 3h of our arrival and getting that close is rare in Paris. My full appreciation to the bodyguards, friendly although no-nonsense, super-professionals. I also appreciate Robert Habeck’s talk – short, concise, well argued. Several other ministers and – of course – the Chancellor himself visited as well; however, we stayed out of their way. Btw. the reason I write “we” is that AirtaXYZ™ dispatched a 2-person delegation. Another benefit of ILA vs. Paris is the unobstructed view of the flight displays – I wish I had that last year when Volocopter performed. Watching an #A400M and the new #A321XLR at 60 degrees banking, “pulling 2 g”, or #helicopters performing a looping is always fascinating. Finally, several rare aircraft were on display and available for onboard visits. The A310 #AirZeroG, a 1971 NATO Boeing E-3 Sentry (a large #AWACS aircraft), and a brand-new Airbus #BelugaXL (only on weekend). All with modest queues. The downside then is that – except for Lilium – no full-size #eVTOL was on display, and only very few electric airplanes. Bummer. Basically all OEM representatives told us the same story – our aircraft is in ground/flight test and thus we can’t/don’t show it here. Except Boeing/Wisk, who are testing an outdated earlier version, and thus could have brought their mock-up, but just chose not to. 2. #Electric propulsion enters #defence Electric motors and propellers for hover capability are becoming mainstream in defence. And the solutions are – as always – completely different depending on which side of the Atlantic you are. I’ll do a separate post on those. 3. We may have a multi-purpose electric 2-seater In contrast to the Pipistrel Aircraft Velis this one has up to 2.5 h endurance and tow-capability: the Elektra Solar GmbH Trainer. More on this, on the stunning Lilium Jet mock-up and the VÆRIDION Microliner next week. 4. Airbus works on a #H2-electric jet-fan Sometimes thinking INTO a "box" is what leads to doubled(!) efficiency: in the recently started, #EU-funded #HYLENA project, Airbus exploits its patents on Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, integrated in the core of a conventional looking high-bypass fan engine (as used by A321XLR). Only that the fan is driven by e-motors and in addition H2 can be burnt, creating extra thrust when needed. Thanks a lot, Tanja Neuland for alerting me! That’s a potential game-changer.
