Today at International Women’s Day I would like to say thank you to my father. He always encouraged me to try and coached me if needed. Have you lubricated the bearings on your bike or fixed your car with gas welding? I have! Do I have any use of these learnings today? No, I haven’t. The important learning for me was that I can do much more than what I believe is possible. The automotive industry is on a transformation journey. Transformation means that we need to do something differently than before. Having a diverse workforce helps us to think differently. Diversity and inclusion are the keys to succeed with our challenges. Let’s encourage each other to do more than what we think are possible. #WeAreVolvoGroup #IWD2024 #InspireInclusion

🗣 Next up in our #IWD2024 series, we spoke with Marina Nilsson Rahel, Front of House Manager at Göteborg Landvetter Airport (GOT) and Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) and Vania Lampitt, Passenger Services Manager at London Luton Airport (LTN). Two inspirational women, who have been with Menzies for almost 15 years each. 👏 When asked about Menzies’ ambitious plans to improve gender diversity, including 25% of women in senior leadership roles by 2025, Marina believes “Menzies is demonstrating why gender diversity is key”. She also says that the company’s focus on allyship is bringing about positive change: “I have had great support from several male colleagues and mentors - words of encouragement, a second opinion or new career opportunities.”  ‘Invest in women: Accelerate progress’ is not only the theme of #IWD2024, but it also encapsulates our Women in Leadership Programme, which both Marina and Vania have completed. Reflecting on her experience, Vania comments: “I loved every single minute of it. It offered valuable leadership training, skill development and great networking opportunities. It was also inspiring to complete this programme with such senior female role models.” 💪 Vania believes raising awareness and improving representation is key to attract more women to aviation. “The industry should focus on creating more awareness of aviation careers at an early educational level, perhaps offering apprenticeships to young women and actively promoting success stories of female leaders in aviation,” she explained. Marina’s advice to women considering a career in aviation: “Trust your ability and go for it! And don’t forget, obstacles can be hidden opportunities." On this Zero Discrimination Day, let us all remind ourselves that discrimination has no place in the world. The differences that make us all unique individuals should be celebrated. As the Women in Aviation & Aerospace Charter community came together recently at its 3rd annual dinner, sponsored by Oliver Wyman and Rolls-Royce, we paused to reflect on what has been achieved and what still needs to be done to create a more diverse and inclusive industry for all. The community celebrated progress with 255 organizations now signed up to the Charter, since our launch five years ago, and some improvements in the UK Gender Pay Gap in parts of the aviation and aerospace sectors. But significant gender disparity remains, and industry leaders (the perspectives of some of whom are captured below), are ready to act. WHY: The industry connects people from around the world, and if it is to innovate, it’s essential to represent those the industry serves in strategic decision-making and operational senior leadership positions. HOW: Continue driving the WIAA Charter commitments; having one member of an organization’s senior executive team accountable for diversity and inclusion; setting targets and publishing progress against them annually; and linking executive pay to delivery on gender diversity and inclusion. As explored through our work together this year, there is a critical role for men to play, who make up a significant proportion of senior leadership (86% of senior airline roles globally are held by men), to move from allyship to advocacy. And it is key to continue challenging and collaborating as an industry to improve together. Looking forward to 2024. On March 8, Atlas Air Worldwide honored International Women’s Day and Women of Aviation Worldwide Week by spotlighting a remarkable all-female flight crew. Captains Dorothea Flockenhaus and Deanna Stack, leading the Atlas Air 737, embarked from Alliance Airport (AFW) in Fort Worth, Texas, bound for Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG). Before their journey, the captains shared their experiences and insights, aiming to motivate others to explore aviation careers and dismantle longstanding barriers that have hindered women’s opportunities in the industry. “I find incredible joy in this industry and flying because we have the privilege of soaring to new heights and exploring unique destinations around the globe that many people may never have the opportunity to visit,” said Captain Stack. “The women and young girls aspiring to join this profession have no limitations to what they can achieve.” “This is a dynamic industry that is ever-changing and offers an office view like no other,” said Captain Flockenhaus. “To the young women considering a career in aviation, my advice is simple: Seize the opportunity! Why Diversity Matters: A diverse workforce brings varied perspectives to problem-solving and decision-making processes. Despite progress, the logistics industry still faces challenges related to gender imbalance. Women represent only a fraction of the workforce in the transport sector, with even fewer occupying senior management roles. To address these disparities, concerted efforts are needed at all levels of the industry.
