CLC signatory Air New Zealand has just signed its largest sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) deal yet, also marking the largest purchase of SAF outside of North America and Europe. "Decarbonising Air New Zealand's operations is essential for the airline's long-term ability to connect New Zealanders to the world, as well as support the country's trade and tourism sectors, and SAF is a key enabler of this...Sustainable aviation fuel is currently the only solution to significantly reduce emissions from long haul flight, but it currently makes up less than 1% of the global fuel supply. For aviation to reach its net zero carbon emissions goals by 2050, the SAF industry will need to scale significantly," said Air New Zealand Chair Dame Therese Walsh. The imperative of scaling up sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply chains in Europe, North America, and the Middle East is at the forefront of aviation discussions today. Despite facing numerous hurdles such as policy gaps, market dynamics, and infrastructure limitations, there is a concerted effort by stakeholders to drive widespread adoption of SAF. Through innovative initiatives and strategic approaches, these challenges are being addressed to expedite the transition to sustainable aviation practices. Collaboration between governments, industry leaders, and stakeholders is essential to foster innovation, attract investment, and establish robust regulatory frameworks to facilitate the production and distribution of SAF on a global scale.

During the panel discussion on Europe’s role in global aviation, focusing on shaping policies for sustainable growth, CEO Yvonne Makolo emphasized the importance of investing in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the continent, which is currently not available. There is a need to balance accelerating aviation penetration, which remains low in the continent and doing this sustainably. Makolo stressed the crucial need for more incentives in SAF production.

What are the routes to the decarbonisation of commercial aviation? How is the UK upscaling SAF production, and what is the government doing to encourage airlines to increase uptake? How do net zero strategies differ for medium to long-haul carriers, compared to short-haul airlines? Andy Smith, head of sustainability strategy at Loganair Limited, answers my questions for Airline Routes & Ground Services.

Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is key to decarbonising the aviation sector and is an integral part of our #netzero journey. Compared to conventional jet fuel, #SAF is made from renewable and waste sources and has the potential to reduce >80% of lifecycle carbon emissions. As both the major shareholder and a corporate customer of Cathay Pacific we are delighted to continue our support for its Corporate SAF Programme. Launched in 2022, this programme enables its corporate customers to reduce their carbon footprint from business travel or airfreight shipments by contributing to the use of SAF in CX flights. By collectively advocating for the widespread adoption of SAF, we aim to send a powerful message to the market to accelerate SAF production. This initiative not only helps us fulfill our Net Zero by 2050 commitment but also supports the transition towards renewable energy in the aviation industry. Further supporting the cause, Swire Pacific has recently joint the Hong Kong Sustainable Aviation Fuel Coalition (HKSAFC) as one of its 13 founding partners. Welcome news from UK Government - a mandate is being tabled that will set the scene for decarbonising the UK aviation industry. Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is currently the only viable route to decarbonisation of aviation. A solid mandate will be a huge step towards supporting an emerging SAF production industry in Britain. Firefly Green Fuels particularly welcome the mechanism to incentivise use of SAF with lower GHG intensity, like ours, which should ensure that UK SAF is the most sustainable in the world. With our recently announced production facility in Harwich, Firefly Green Fuels will be able to produce around 43,000 tonnes of SAF per year. The UK produces enough sewage to support three of these facilities, with a potential to eventually make around 200,000 tonnes of SAF annually - equivalent to around 50% of the 2030 mandate. https://lnkd.in/eggQYfEW

Commission welcomes new UN Aviation Agency global target for sustainable aviation fuels✈️ The European Commission welcomes the agreement reached today at the third International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3) on a global framework for sustainable aviation fuels and other cleaner aviation energy. This includes the aspirational goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 5% by 2030 through increased use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) worldwide.
