The defense sector has been the forerunner of supporting DeepTech innovations globally be it in propulsion, communications, transportation, cybersecurity, new materials, and many more fields. Then why do startups looking at defense find it harder to raise venture capital money? One can argue that the answer lies in the fundamental way VCs think about investments - a product-oriented company looking to burn cash for several years before turning profitable resulting in a large outcome. Over the last few years, India has seen a boom in the number of DefenseTech startups. Defense, iDEX, ISRO, and others have opened the floodgates for innovation to flourish by offering various projects and grants to startups looking to solve immense challenges with a large revenue pool waiting to be captured by innovators, albeit in what may seem like a services-based approach. It will be interesting to see how VCs in the subcontinent adapt their thought process to invest in DeepTech for defense where the company follows a services-based model with an eventual product outcome. Longer fund cycles? Capture revenue first vs. burning cash on developing one product? Shift in services vs. product mindset? Uncertain and exciting times. Investing in deep tech companies is crucial to driving major changes and shaping a better tomorrow. Europe has the potential to lead as a global center of Deep Tech innovation with top-ranking research institutions, a highly educated workforce, increased public funding initiatives (i.e., €1bn Nato Innovation Fund), and widespread support for science and technology. However, potential alone is not enough if we do not seize the opportunity ourselves. That's why this is the best time for European VCs to support deep tech startups.
