One of the most underrated and underappreciated tools in the toolkits of the most effective nonprofit leaders is vision. The truth is whether it's in nonprofit land or anywhere else, nothing big ever happens without a vision. Whether it's at the community level or worldwide, big ambitious things take vision in order to bring them about. And it also requires the ability to transform that vision into reality. Chances are you have a vision of how you want things to be. But if you want that vision to become a reality, it's going to require some very specific things from you. Just having the vision isn't enough. You have to pursue that vision through consistent, concrete action. And that's no easy thing, because there are a million things that get in the way. And so you also have to be able to train yourself in some core practices and habits that will allow you to actually bring that vision to reality. For me, this interview with / quote from, Vilas Dhar at The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation, sums up exactly how we should be thinking about AI (and technology more broadly). “I think too often, we have lived in a paradigm where technology is something that’s used against us. Sometimes it’s something that is done to us, and maybe in a few glimmers of hope, it’s done for us. But very rarely […] is technology something that’s done by us. If ever there was an urgent need (not just a coolness design motivation) for human centered design, it is now. But we need the right people at the table to design for the multitude of problems we face as a species, in order to turn them into opportunities. I hope more organizations have The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation at the table.
