As our environments of work and home profoundly changed through lockdowns, value was shown where it had previously been overlooked, and new possibilities for how we occupied our physical environments emerged – sometimes radically. Alongside these rapid adaptations, climate impacts and significant rises in living costs have been exerting their own influence on the patterns of our daily urban life. What’s this now mean for our disrupted city centres? What economic, social, and cultural rhythms do we want to see develop in the future? In the aftermath of the pandemic, what lessons and values about the importance of the CBD as a key hub now guide us? Just what is the future of the Australian CBD? The heart of the conversation was our founder, Martina, and our insightful white paper on redesigning student flats for a better living experience 💙 Key Panelists: - Martina Pardo from A Designer At Heart Ltd - Benjamin Hall - LOFT® from LOFT.uk - Lowri Edwards, wellbeing manager at Student Roost - Antony Allen from Nido - Sarah Canning and Deenie Lee from The Property Marketing Strategists as our moderators The discussion evolved around student needs and how we can adapt our designs to meet them 💡 👉 Deenie Lee highlighted a crucial point: "I think one of the things that keeps coming back to me is are we too often trying to make a one size fits all? And what a first year student needs is not necessarily what a second year student needs." 👉 Martina shared her observations: "We were thinking in a communal study room, especially on the ground floor, you would need to unpack your stuff every day at the end of the day. So it might be that in some situations, students prefer to stay in their bedroom." She added, "We thought that some of the results were quite interesting. So nearly 50% of students prefer to live with three to four people maximum. As we all know, there is an overall concern about affordability." A disproportional amount of this increasingly busy space is given over to legacy uses from the twentieth century such as roads for private cars and parking. Lets give London the future it deserves by creating a pedestrian superhighway running straight through the capital creating spaces to play, interact, rest eat, compete, watch, dance and thrive. Starting at Old street roundabout and continuing directly west through Clerkenwell, Farringdon, Holborn, New Oxford Street, and Oxford Street before terminating in Marble Arch THE ATTENBOROUGH LINE will be a new piece of Infrastructure for London. Lifting mass transit off the ground plane with cable cars, creating generous cycle lanes for 2 and 4 wheeled electric bicycles, the new ATTENBOROUGH LINE will be a wide boulevard that will house all kinds of natural elements and spaces for community activities. We will create a city wide urban activation that will be as inclusive as it is atmospheric. From open air auditoriums to arboretums, from boules to boulevards, this is a chance to create a true city of the future which will cement London as progressive, innovative and brave. Get Living is bringing forward improved proposals for the West site of the Elephant and Castle Town Centre redevelopment.   The business is deep in consultation with the community on revised plans which respond to changes in policy environment since the original consent in 2019.   The exciting changes to the proposals include:   🔷 The new plans will add 450 purpose-built student accommodation beds to Phase 3 of the masterplan while including the same number of previously consented homes.   🔷 The proposals also include improvements to the architecture of the proposed scheme in line with the changing landscape of Elephant and Castle, as well as improved public realm with a new public square.   🔷 There has also been a reduction in carbon with a move to all-electric.   Elsewhere, Phase 2 on the East site is well underway and set to complete in 2026. NEWS: Northwestern University Reimagines Jacobs Center as a Hub for Social Sciences -- Northwestern University began construction in April of 2024 on an interior renovation of the Donald P. Jacobs Center in Evanston, Ill. Designed by William Rawn Associates, Architects, Inc. and Sheehan Nagle Hartray Architects, the transformed facility will act as a beacon of innovation in the social sciences where tomorrow’s leaders will explore new solutions to pressing global challenges. The existing 340,000-sf structure most recently housed the Kellogg School of Management and was built in phases between 1972 and 2001. Funded in part by a $10 million donation, the project will accommodate classrooms, labs, offices, meeting and seminar rooms, gathering spaces, and a dining area. Vibrant collaboration venues will enable faculty and students to engage in shared discovery, complemented by a 150-person event venue opening onto an outdoor terrace. The center will house the Roberta Buffett Institute for Global Affairs, the Institute for Policy Research, and scholars from the School of Education and Social Policy. Several departments within the Northwestern University - Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences will be located in the building, as well as the Program in Global Health Studies and the Center for International and Area Studies.
