What is an important natural resource, loved by sailors and surfers, but is also something we avoid and seek protection from? Answer? The wind! Erica Hörteborn, PhD student at Chalmers, has investigated the interaction between wind and knitted textiles and concluded that knitted architecture has good potential in being able to improve the urban environment in various ways. With her background as civil engineer and architect, Erica combines research that opens up the concept of connecting knitted textiles, wind and architecture. By subjecting the textile to wind tunnel tests and measuring its capacity for wind reduction, Erica has been able to show that properties of knitted textiles, such as porosity and flexibility, mean that they effectively dampen and filter out unpleasant wind and turbulence. Something that could be used to improve the urban space by creating a more pleasant environment to live in. #architecture #urbanenvironment #urbanspace #knitting #textile #windreduction #chalmersuniversityoftechnology

Exciting advancements in the timber industry are on the horizon! New research by Dominik Reisach, Dr.-Ing. Stephan Schütz, Dr. Jan Wellmann, and Sven Schneider demonstrates the transformative potential of repurposing waste wood, using digital design and fabrication techniques. By converting low-quality timber offcuts into high-value architectural structures, the team demonstrates a scalable solution to the persistent issue of material waste in the timber industry. As the demand for larger and taller modular timber structures in cross-laminated timber (CLT) rises, ensuring robust horizontal connections between modules becomes imperative for structural integrity. However, this can inadvertently lead to acoustic contact bridges. In anticipation of an upcoming project in the Netherlands, CDM Stravitec conducted a comprehensive test arrangement using two 3D modules in CLT to explore different methods of interconnection. Fire Lab The news of our new lab for the testing of wood structures has reached Hochparterre, the Swiss architecture and design magazine. The article in Hochparterre’s September 2023 issue discusses the importance of fire testing in the development of modern wood construction. The new oven on Campus Hönggerberg built by ETH Immobilien for Professor Dr. Andrea Frangi allows to run realistic physical fire simulations and test the capacity of structural elements to withstand various temperature impacts. I am excited to share the glimpse of my master’s thesis project on “urban sustainability: the design of a tall timber structure in Philadelphia, PA” This research uncovers the immense potential of embracing low-impact structural materials such as mass timber, replacing conventional, high-environmental-impact materials like concrete and steel. By doing so, the aim is to significantly reduce the embodied carbon footprint associated with the structure's construction. Additionally, this project explores innovative avenues for decreasing the operational energy consumption of the building. Through height optimization simulations conducted using Ladybug Tools, that delve into the strategies to maximize energy efficiency.
