How many styles of architecture are in downtown Honolulu? Many more than I ever imagined! Michael and I recently took the AIA Honolulu Architectural Walking Tour of Downtown Honolulu. It’s a 10/10! Highly recommend! We were both amazed with the vast variety of architectural styles that make up downtown Honolulu. Working, living, driving, and dining there day in and day out, it had begun to blend together in our mind’s eye. But when you stop, step back, take a breath, and really focus, I reckon you’d be amazed, too. Here are but a few of the styles that our tour guide Ernie Endrina pointed out in the 90 minute walking tour. 🏛️ Spanish Revival Mediterranean 🏛️ Art Deco 🏛️ Colonial 🏛️ Gothic Revival 🏛️ Spanish Mission Revival 🏛️ Greek Revival 🏛️ Hawaiian 🏛️ Renaissance Revival 🏛️ American Florentine with French touches 🏛️ Medieval 🏛️ Contemporary 🏛️ Plantation 🏛️ Mid-Century Modern I am sure there are others I missed, but you get the picture. Suffice to say, downtown Honolulu is steeped in so many beautiful styles of architecture! Again, I highly recommend the AIA walking tour, but if tours aren’t your thing, just take a slow stroll and soak it all in! The former HECO building is one of my favorites! The building was designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style (popular for large buildings in the 20s) and is characterized by a terra cotta roof, stucco exterior, round arch motifs with ornate detailing and ornamental iron work. The whole historic downtown sector is filled with great styles and stories!
