👉 In the past year, the retail community has become obsessed with 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐚 (‘DRM’). From our benchmarking, we are seeing leading manufacturers leveraging their category positions, and the DRM frenzy, to secure deeper levels of data from their retailer customers (Amazon, Walmart, Target, Walgreens, Tesco, Ocado Group, Carrefour, Esselunga, Shopee, Lazada, Coupang, Gmarket, Rakuten, Coles Group, Woolworths Group etc.).
𝐇𝐨𝐰? Well, the best use case we have seen is a global Beers, Wines, Spirits ('BWS') manufacturer which, in the UK, have taken the position of ‘𝑵𝒐 𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒂, 𝒏𝒐 𝒅𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒂𝒓𝒔’ with their major retailer customers. ‘𝑾𝒆 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒅𝒊𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒊𝒏𝒗𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒎𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒍 𝒎𝒆𝒅𝒊𝒂 𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒊𝒏 𝒓𝒆𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒏 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄 𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒂’. This successful negotiation has delivered a level of insight into the consumer decision journey that was previously unattainable, leading to significant competitive advantage.
For online market share, unfortunately the industry has not evolved at the speed needed. There are many providers of accurate Amazon market share (been available for years) but beyond Amazon, we’re only seeing pockets of market share capabilities emerging for retailers (e.g. Walmart in the US, Shopee & Lazada in Southeast Asia). In China, of course, market share has been widely available for a number of years. There are few player emerging with quarterly market share reports leveraging clickstream and e-receipts.
