If you're in Europe, you may notice that plastic bottle caps are now permanently attached to the bottles. This has recyclability benefits, but can also be a bit annoying. Without regulation, there is no way most companies would make this change. I think it illustrates that almost all efforts to improve packaging sustainability come with trade offs. Sustainability stands as a key concern across all nodes of the beauty industry, and in recent years, sustainable packaging concerns have been quite openly discussed and worked upon. To address the idea, certain brands have begun utilising recyclable materials, including paper, bioplastic, monomaterial, post-consumer recycled material, etc., although achieving complete recyclability, considering every aspect from packaging to bottles, brand stickers, caps, and pumps, can pose challenges. Monodose packaging is an interesting aspect of the personal care industry, emerging slowly yet surely.
