For Women’s History Month, we’re recognizing the successes and achievements of BARDA employees. Meet Connie Song, Lead Contract Specialist, Division of Contract Management and Acquisitions. One of Connie’s greatest career achievements to date is having the opportunity to support the BARDA mission and working with such a talented and dedicated group. She added, “specifically providing contracting support to the Division of Research, Innovation and Ventures (DRIVe) in launching new and novel program initiatives.” Connie’s advice to young women who are just starting their professional careers is: “stay true to yourself and pursue your passions. Those incremental steps (some of which will feel like steps backwards) toward achieving every goal you set out to tackle is part of the experience that makes those more challenging moments worthwhile — there’s no failure in learning.” Women strengthen public health and national security with their dedication to meaningful work. Meet Glyne A. Griffith II, DBA, CDP, CSR in Organizational Leadership graduate and Vice President of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Social Impact at Dallas Symphony Orchestra. Driven by compassion, he's breaking barriers in the world of arts. "It begins with having an empathetic spirit and a desire to intentionally seek opportunities to continually increase one’s cultural awareness and learn about the experiences of people of a different race/ethnicity/background. One can do this through nurturing relationships with co-workers and friends, learning more about their lived experiences, and lending support as an ally when an opportunity avails itself." Dr. Griffith's doctoral degree equipped him with business acumen, making a positive impact in his community. He emphasizes the power of representation, serving as inspiration for young minds. For Dr. Griffith, the essential support during his doctoral journey was "The 3 F's – Faith, Family, Faculty." His wellness tip for students: Schedule dedicated time for hobbies to prevent burnout on the marathon of academia. 🎓💙

Princeton University just announced its first assistant VP for "diversity, equity and inclusion". I recommend starting by identifying the metrics that will be used to measure these goals. Most complex problems that I work on have well defined metrics (but there are multiple, competing metrics). This is a problem where I suspect that metrics will be hard to define. Then, list the decisions that have an impact on these metrics. Decisions represent actions that can be taken. Without clear performance metrics and decisions, there is a risk that the new position is just window dressing. Without well defined decisions (actions) that will impact the metrics, then the position is reduced to hoping. With answers to these two questions (plus a few more, but these are the hard ones), then we can formulate this job as a sequential decision problem.
