During the AI for Good Global Summit organized by the International Telecommunication Union in Geneva, Ant Group's APE (Ant Personalization Engine) was featured in the "AI for Good-Innovate for Impact Report" as an exemplary use case. Built upon Ant Group's self-developed machine learning system, APE aims to assist small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in effectively engaging with their audiences. Released in 2022, APE utilizes advanced technologies including large language models, knowledge graphs, and AI-generated content (AIGC) to provide customized recommendations within SMEs’ mini-programs. Addressing the high costs of traditional personalized recommendation engines, which can exceed hundreds of thousands of USD annually, APE offers a more accessible and cost-efficient alternative to SMEs. APE enhances the experience for new customers and maintains ongoing engagement by leveraging AIGC to generate engaging content. Supported by an automated operation and maintenance platform, this also allows for a reduction in manual processes and operational costs. Most interesting read of the week. I have spent a decade in major gifts and working with donor advised funds on the grants side and have an understanding of the pros and cons of DAFs for donors and for non-profits that desperately need funding now. When I took my role at Village Capital, my eyes were opened to the possibility of using philanthropic capital for impact investment - potentially leveraging the $228B+ in DAF assets toward the innovative and impactful solutions lead by startups for environmental and social issues we are facing around the world. The article featured in ImpactAlpha Alpha this week about using donor advised funds for impact investment - as well as the earlier article this week on The California Endowment shifting it's $4B in assets under management to investments aligned with their mission and values - gives me hope that this combination philanthropic support and impact investment can finally move the needle on the issues that so desperately need attention. “I hope that people can see impact investing as a spectrum. There is this place for highly attractive financial returns and also good, respectable impact, but if you want to tackle some of the more intractable problems in society or in the environment, you can't expect a market rate of return. There needs to be a spotlight on a lot of the most commercially attractive solutions, but also, I don't think we can just sweep all of the other problems and challenges that don't make tons of money under the rug. There are still ways to achieve sustainable returns. I'm not saying that has to be solely the purview of philanthropy or charity, but people, sometimes, have a bit of trouble looking at all the spaces in between charity on the one hand, and then all out for profit-driven investing.
