Thank you Brendan. The private equity industry needs hardcore guardrails, but the employees of U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission shall get plucked by BlackRock, Blackstone, KKR, The Carlyle Group and others in the afterlife.
Raining on the private equity parade is not very prudent, given that cost of living is so high that a regular SEC employee will never afford the best opportunities for their children or a great standard of living without that PE salary in the future.
"Don't hate the player, hate the game" is the cop-out people who work in financial services often use. "Why not both?" is what I say to that. The players lobby for the game to be what it is; that's what makes playing it attractive.
About 8 years ago I was sitting at a The Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College event, Charles Tien mentioned the following truism "You stand where you sit". That saying has been with me since.
Some of the players are kind, thoughtful, well-meaning people, who think that their personal material interest in the matter of regulation just happens to align with the public good. Very few recognize their own greed and corruption.
They need to be aided in gaining that recognition by bankruptcy court & criminal judges, regulators, auditors, lawmakers, etc.
