Kamikaze and FPV drones now kill more Ukrainian soldiers and Russian soldiers than artillery or aircraft. 80% of that production comes from China. “Drones kill more soldiers on both sides than anything else at present. They have also created a scenario whereby almost everything can be seen by drones, not just on the front line but to a depth of between 10km and 30km on either side.” - Ukraine’s commander of ground forces Pavliuk

♻️The changing face of warfare. Let’s re-think our traditional approach to warfare for this new generation of Uncrewed Air Vehicles. ➡️Drones can no longer be looked at as just hobbyists ‘fun toys’ taking selfie pictures of our homes, neighborhoods and surroundings ➡️ A First Person View UAV/drone and Single Operator has the capacity to (i) wipe out multiple tanks & armored vehicles, (ii) infantry units, (iii) radar stations, and (iv) missile installations, with minimum ground support ➡️ Many of these UAVs using 3D printers can be designed, developed and built in just hours ➡️ Cost to build these UAV/drones are SIGNIFICANTLY lower than equivalent air vehicles ➡️ On-board Sensor, Optical and GPS/SatNav technologies have advanced to a point that UAVs can accurately identify Friend vs Foe and pinpoint targets for maximum effectiveness ➡️ Returns on Investments (ROI) are approaching 1500:1 and will only increase ➡️ Swarming technology is at a point that it could very soon multiply 10-100X impact and efficiencies Have I missed anything? #uavdronewarfare #uavdronetechnology #uavdroneswarms
Another reason why the US DoD needs to RAPIDLY change: One UKR soldier eliminated a Russian Force equivalent to a MEU using only FPV drones. In just five months (Jan-May 2024), a 25-year-old Ukrainian soldier, Tymofiy Orel, used FPV drones to take down an entire Russian Brigade (-). Orel’s efforts resulted in the elimination of 434 Russian soldiers, wounding 346 more, and destroying 134 armored vehicles—including 42 tanks, 10 MT-LBs, 28 APCs, and 44 IFVs. https://lnkd.in/ega_PaFv

A more serious Sunday post. This is why war and open conflict needs to be avoided at all costs. As a parent, a big part of me is always thinking about the world my kids will grow up in- from the risk of economic and environmental turmoil through to the risk of their exposure to open war. Australia, and indeed western democracy is not ready for what the future of warfare will look like. The fact that this 25 year old was able to pick apart the equivalent of an entire brigade with a lot of gear with some FPV drones is incredibly sad and scary. In particular, when you look beyond the context of Eastern Europe and instead at the actual and potential human toll, the scale that this technology can reach, and its implications for what the future looks like- you can see it’s truly terrifying. Yet here in Australia it feels we continue to spend more taxpayer money on the expensive and exquisite (tanks, submarines etc) while only dabbling at the edges with R&D into future thinking technology without necessarily thinking about true scale. As a country, at our current run rate, it feels like we will end up with some really well funded, well meaning PHDs, largely possibly impotent legacy platforms procured off well meaning foreign primes (at tax payer’s expense) and my kids needing to learn to use Duolingo… There is a growing view that the current western defence primes that make up the existing military industrial complex (ironically) aren’t made for war time. They’re incredibly sophisticated peacetime publicly listed financial instruments run by boards beholden to shareholder votes but are likely poor candidates to drive a modern day warmachine that calls for innovation and scale at speed in the context of a looming truly global conflict. I am not having a go at PHDs and foreign primes by the way. I want to be clear that my point is we need more industrialists and builders in the space. If we can mobilise private capital (lots of it), founders (lots of them) who are focussed on speed and scale and those from outside of the existing defence infrastructure to work with defence- the future may not be so bleak! Ps: in relation to Black Sky, I’m not the aspirational industrialist- that’s on Blake and Karl.

The Ukrainian military-industrial complex is presently undergoing a unique transition from Soviet to NATO standards, with the production of artillery systems already aligned with NATO standards. Additionally, there has been a twofold increase in the production of ammunition, as highlighted by Minister for Strategic Industries Oleksandr Kamyshin during a panel discussion at the Ukraine House in Davos. Moreover, the assembly of hybrid air defense systems has commenced, and there is an expansion in the production of drones and thermal imagers. Notably, the drone production sector in Ukraine is experiencing rapid growth, with Minister Kamyshin mentioning a significant reduction in production costs from US$1,000 to US$500. The most economical drones manufactured in Ukraine are priced at US$300. To address shortages in critical components, collaborative efforts with foreign partners through the establishment of joint ventures are underway. #war #ukraine #warinukraine #russia #russiaukrainewar #weapons #weapon #military #drone

New NATO UAV Carries Large Offensive Weapons (sound ON for easy narration)... the RAF’s Jackal drone, from Flyby Technology led by Jon Parker FRAeS is poised to be a game-changer when it comes to military weaponry. This UAV has proven itself to do a significant task that other drones can’t; firing large missiles in a recoilless manner. This may be the difference between winning and losing a battle. 🗣 The commander of the youngest type of troops talked about the next steps of reforming unmanned systems. 💬 As noted by the commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces, Vadym Sukharevskyi, if we talk about aerial drones operating at a tactical depth (up to 20 km), the Armed Forces of Ukraine have enormous experience and capabilities in this field — more than 165 aerial vehicles alone. For the Armed Forces and weapons manufacturers, the development of interceptors, artillery fire adjustment systems, counter-battery combat, unmanned systems capable of working effectively at operational (up to 100 km) and strategic depths (over 100 km) are also a priority. ✈️ Among the next steps in the reform of unmanned systems are the introduction of swarm strike tactics and the installation of "own-foreign" systems on unmanned vehicles, which were previously used only in aviation.
