Chinese webportal 观察者网 reported that the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI), released a report on August 28th that China leads the world in the research of most advanced technologies, suggesting that the U.S., U.K., Australia, Japan, and South Korea should cooperate to catch up in order to avoid the risks to national security caused by technological monopolies.
The original abstract of the ASPI report please see: https://lnkd.in/dD6x9-ii
Regardless how accurate the report is, one thing is certain like a German proverb says "The competitor doesn't sleep". I think Chinese sleep literally much less than people in the West. The Western styled democracy cannot be a good model without its dominance in cutting-edge technologies.
The ASPI survey analyzed the “top 10%” of cited academic papers published between 2003 and 2023. After analyzing 64 advanced technologies in key areas including defense, space, energy, environment, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and robotics, China was found to be a global leader in 57 of these technologies, accounting for nearly 90% of the total.
Nikkei Asia reported on the 29th August that the results of the survey show that the competitiveness of China and the United States in advanced technologies has reversed over the past 20 years or so.
In the five years from 2003 to 2007, the U.S. ranked first in more than 90% (60) of 64 technologies, while China ranked first in only three. 2019 to 2023, the U.S. ranked first in only seven technologies, such as quantum computation, vaccines, and healthcare countermeasures, while China's number of first-ranked technologies has increased dramatically from the previous three to 57, the report said.
According to the report, China's most significant increase is in technologies that can be applied to military applications. The so-called “technology monopoly risk” estimated based on the concentration of research is divided into three levels, in the highest level of “high risk” technology, China's radar, satellite positioning, drones and other 24 technologies ranked first.
In terms of citations of hypersonic missile-related technology papers, China accounted for 73%, leaving behind the United States (13%) and the United Kingdom (3%). In terms of advanced aeronautical engines, China's 63% share is much higher than that of the U.S. (7%), which is in second place.
The picture also shows an aspect of China's technology and its implementation in comparison to other countries.
