Deals worth £13 Billion to the UK aerospace sector were announced at the 2024 Farnborough International Airshow. We have significant elements of the major players based in Wales including Airbus, BAE Systems, Thales, GE Aerospace and Raytheon UK and money from those deals will flow into local employment and supply chains. Around 700 sets of wings will be produced this year at the Airbus Broughton plant in Flintshire. As always we took a group of smaller companies with us on the Wales stand, supported by Welsh Government, some as exhibitors and others using the stand as a base for meetings during the show. An initial estimate suggests that total potential orders for those participants will reach £20 million this year, modest in terms of the sales achieved by the larger companies but vitally important for the smaller companies and the communities they serve across Wales. #FIAWales2024. https://lnkd.in/eEnYw-uc

But advanced manufacturing doesn’t matter now that we are a “services superpower” according to Resolution Foundation’s Torsten Bell, now a government MP and potential influencer. The reality is that this thesis overlooks the fact that the distinction between manufacturing and services has long been blurred. AESSEAL one of our most innovative advanced manufacturing companies has for decades regarded itself as a service industry, as have its customers; likewise Rolls-Royce was an early pioneer of “servitisation” many decades ago (power by the hour). Rather than make a fetish of these sectors perhaps we would do better to identify high growth, high value added businesses and adapt policy to accelerate their growth and market share. Defence, space, aerospace and energy are where the real growth is, especially in places like South Yorkshire: not services. The one big area of “service” growth is in financial services, which has had a deeply damaging effect on the wider economy over the last two decades as global “financialisation” creates waves of market uncertainty and volatility as exampled by the 2008 GFC and the Euro Crisis the following year: events that have seriously impeded productivity led growth. The challenge for manufacturing is not the lack of an “industrial strategy” or an “industrial strategy council “ but the corrupting power and influence the global financial system exerts over elected governments in the western world — particularly the US and the UK as Rana Foroohar and Mariana Mazzucato have so brilliantly chronicled. For those folk championing an industrial strategy and an independent council, they might do well to recall that the government appointed head of the UK’s Industrial Strategy Council before its demise was none other than Andy Haldane, a master of the universe and former chief economist at the Bank of England. Alongside Andy, the overwhelming majority of his fellow members were from the big “service” and “tech” providers, with just one lone SME manufacturing voice. When Booster Boris scuttled the Industrial Strategy and its Council everyone went down with the ship; mercifully few manufacturers were casualties however as they had not been invited on board when Theresa “strong and stable” May toasted its launch. Lesson. Be careful what you wish for.

Transitioning from OCC to IOCC undoubtedly poses significant challenges and requires significant time Nevertheless, the benefits of this conversion are manifold, as IOCC ultimately optimizes operations, resulting in heightened efficiency and enhanced adaptability in task management. Go on climbing at the highest level that we can
Vincent 'Vinny' Veneziano, Thanks for sharing this excellent video of the Air France OCC. Their OCC setup is very similar to what you would find in the US. The operational control rules are different. However, the core efforts of everyone that works in OCC/NOC/IOC environments are the same. Often times it's just the paint on the outside that differentiates the behind the scenes work. https://lnkd.in/gGiYYtY9
