Indeed “how is global media covering Africa?” Congratulations Africa No Filter on the launch of ‘Global Media Index For Africa’ Below are two of my top highlights from the summary of the report. “* There were no high performers in the ‘diversity of topics’ reported on, with the lion’s share of news about Africa being about politics, poverty, corruption and related negative subjects. There was scant attention to topics such as culture, the arts, innovation, technology, and other positive developments in the continent found in the online stories. * The voices of ordinary Africans were missing in the stories because global reporting still privileges the voices of powerful elites, both local and international. These include experts, politicians, national leaders, international organisations and others. Very little attention is given to ordinary citizens and other traditionally marginalised voices like young people, women, traditional leaders etc. Once again, The Guardian is in first place with a score of 62% for the range of diverse voices in its articles. Russia Today ranked at number 20 with a score of 36%.” Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eWJfa3eU I am looking forward to reading the full report. Possibly more than once 😀.

This is another proof that Africa needs more effort to tell the African stories from Africans' perspectives. These foreign media will only project the continent the way they perceive it and perception does not always represent reality. In addition, many of their stories are either about African Leaders or negative occurrences in Africa, leaving out the voices of the people. This is more reason I feel proud founding the Centre for Storytelling and Development Initiative (which will launch soon), dedicated to storytelling and development of the African continent. #StoriesMatter #NarrativesMatter We must tell our stories; we must tell them loudly. #ProudlyAfrican #YoungAfricanStorytellers #Storytelling #CSDI
Whose voices matter in global reporting about Africa? The Global Media Index for Africa ranks how 20 of the world’s most influential news outlets cover Africa, and found that news stories still privilege the voices of powerful elites, with little attention given to marginalized voices.. The Guardian is in 1st place with a score of 62%. Russia Today ranked at # 20 with a score of 36%. A new report by Africa No Filter and Africa Practice reveals that negative media stereotypes cost Africa up to US$ 4.2 billion in investment. The report compared reporting on Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa to reporting on Denmark, Malaysia, and Thailand. While this is a matter of concern, African countries must equally focus on improving their institutions, the rule of law, and promote free markets such as by making the Africa Continental Free Trade Area work.
From our previous post, the report by Africa No Filter and Africa Practice on the Cost of Media Stereotypes to Africa.

NEWS AFRICA Africa: End the Negative Narrative, Africa is Thriving - AfDB Chief The AllAfrica Media Leaders' Summit convenes in Nairobi after a decade, gathering top figures from 48 countries to discuss reshaping African media amidst technological shifts. Dr. Akinwumi Adesina of AfDB underscores the importance of independent media in the face of COVID-19 and social media challenges. He champions Africa's positive developments but criticizes their underreporting, proposing a well-funded, independent African media organization. Adesina warns against the rise of misinformation and calls for African-led storytelling to counter biases. The summit emphasizes supporting African journalists and promoting accurate portrayals of the continent, echoing Chinua Achebe's call for Africans to author their own narrative.

A simple question. When we discuss about Media, where is Africa? I would like to hear your thoughts on this question.

SUBMISSIONS: Radio in Anglophone and Francophone Sub-Saharan Africa The Journal of Radio and Audio Media is calling for papers for a special issue, which builds on observations that more than 50 years after independence, relatively distinct dynamics still exist between the media of Sub-Saharan African countries in the Anglophone zone of influence and those in the Francophone zone of influence. In addition to these differences in media landscapes, there is a significant lack of knowledge not only of the respective situation of the media in the two spaces but also of the research produced from these different fields.
