Indeed “how is global media covering Africa?” Congratulations Africa No Filter on the launch of ‘Global Media Index For Africa’ Below are two of my top highlights from the summary of the report. “* There were no high performers in the ‘diversity of topics’ reported on, with the lion’s share of news about Africa being about politics, poverty, corruption and related negative subjects. There was scant attention to topics such as culture, the arts, innovation, technology, and other positive developments in the continent found in the online stories. * The voices of ordinary Africans were missing in the stories because global reporting still privileges the voices of powerful elites, both local and international. These include experts, politicians, national leaders, international organisations and others. Very little attention is given to ordinary citizens and other traditionally marginalised voices like young people, women, traditional leaders etc. Once again, The Guardian is in first place with a score of 62% for the range of diverse voices in its articles. Russia Today ranked at number 20 with a score of 36%.” Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eWJfa3eU I am looking forward to reading the full report. Possibly more than once 😀.

We,Africa No Filter, are proud to announce the launch of the Global Media Index for Africa (GMI)! Along with our partners, The Africa Centre and University of Cape Town, we’ve developed a barometer that will track and measure the way Africa is covered by top global media outlets. The Global Media Index for Africa put 20 leading global media platforms to the test, and analyzed how they tell Africa’s stories, whose voices are being heard, which topics are prioritized, and how fairly they are covered when compared to other continents and countries. It puts the spotlight on some of the little things that feed the negative stereotypes and unconscious biases about Africa. The Global Media Index for Africa will also recommend best practices for more balanced reporting on Africa and its people. Find it below👇🏾 https://lnkd.in/d3gnK8Ph

This is another proof that Africa needs more effort to tell the African stories from Africans' perspectives. These foreign media will only project the continent the way they perceive it and perception does not always represent reality. In addition, many of their stories are either about African Leaders or negative occurrences in Africa, leaving out the voices of the people. This is more reason I feel proud founding the Centre for Storytelling and Development Initiative (which will launch soon), dedicated to storytelling and development of the African continent. #StoriesMatter #NarrativesMatter We must tell our stories; we must tell them loudly. #ProudlyAfrican #YoungAfricanStorytellers #Storytelling #CSDI

3moWow I thank you for this. As an upcoming content creator myself I think you were able to broaden my content planning phase. Africa is described and the description is mostly stereotype and we must identify those inappropriate. Again we must also forward our gratitude to those who mean well in describing who we are to the world. Many people, organizations and governments grew up being fed a set of pictures about Africa. Pictures that can be found globally even in countries labeled better than us. So for them to unlearn most of what was taught for me is a great achievement. I fully support the initiative and wish it can find more platforms to be consumed by Africans and the world.
