What are we being offered by the incoming Labour Government? What’s good in their Manifesto (spoiler alert, not very much)? What’s not good? What could be improved upon and how do we go about pushing them to a place where they actually do something useful that isn’t simply a repeat of the same-old, same-old we’ve had for the past decade and a half? Our third #AccidentalGods #Election2024 Special Guest is Dr @Jeremy-Gilbert, professor of culture and political theory at the University of East London. He’s the author of several books including Twenty First Century Socialism and Hegemony Now: How Wall Street and Big Tech won the world – and how we can win it back which was written with Alex Wiliams. Jeremy’s been on the podcast before back in Episode #95 – and he’s always my go-to person for insight into progressive thinking within the current Labour party, and for a broader, more political scientific view of where we’re at. As chance would have it the Labour party published their manifesto about thirty six hours before we were due to record, so I took the chance to ask Jeremy what he thought of it: what’s good, what could be better, what can we who care about people and planet do to help shift us onto a trajectory where we’re not barrelling towards the edge of the biophysical cliff. I could have made $100K+ on January 6th 2021 by sending buses to DC. Our platform is often used to mobilize causes that I do not personally support. But we created a policy early that forbade its use for hate and violence. The 1st Amendment includes the right to assemble. We talk a lot about freedom of speech and religion, but the right to rally is alongside these equals. The freedom to come together is one that I am privileged to enable with Rally OurBus, but it comes with a qualifier that it must be done peacefully. ☮️ This is not to take political sides. But as a leaders of a platform business run by its users, I can’t be naive. I believe we have a duty to create transparent rules and apply them fairly, as imperfect as we may be. As we approach the elections, we are watching some platforms ignore the caveats of our freedoms. They are choosing power over accountability; money over democracy. Thames Valley Citizens Assembly on Thursday 18th April 6:30 pm Oxford Brookes Thursday 18th April 6:30 pm at OBU – what do we want to win?   We want Thames Valley Police to recognise misogyny as a hate crime so that we can have clearer reporting and better strategies to combat hate crimes against women. This is a campaign that was won first in Nottinghamshire and we have since won in five other police regions but not Thames Valley yet.   We want Thames Valley Police to be a Living Wage Employer.   We want Oxford City Council to provide confidential whistleblower reporting for private tenants in the city and to work with us to increase legal support for tenants.   We want Oxford City Council to support our General Election campaign for government to invest in repair and retrofit of all social housing in a community-led program that means housing shouldn’t cost the earth.   We want Oxford City Council to work with us to make sure Oxford Living Wage employers are accredited properly with the Living Wage Foundation.   REGISTER FOR THE ASSEMBLY HERE Thames Valley Citizens Oxford Assembly (actionnetwork.org)
