I just learnt a better way to recruit staff. Instead of giving everyone a 10:00am appointment, spread all the candidates through different times. Obinna- 9:00am Comfort- 9:45am John- 10:30am Philip- 11: 25 am Linda- 12:00noon Etc. This achieves at least two things. 1. You do not keep candidates waiting all day (which is very important because contrary to popular opinion, potential employees are not slaves without an option) 2. Everyone has a time stamp which forces everyone to keep to a specific time. This will help you strain out unserious people who are bad with time management. _ I am very particular about good workplace models and i'm glad when I learn something that can achieve this. I used to commute 35 miles each way to my job. 😤   That was over 2 hours' worth of time each day, in Houston traffic.   Because of traffic, I would be super stressed going into work.   I knew I needed more flexibility for my mental health.   (Also, traffic wasn't my only issue at that job.)   Nowadays, I can choose when I go into the office.   My HR director is amazing and super understanding.   I actually feel like a part of a team and my ideas are embraced rather than dismissed.   My mental health has improved, and I feel like myself again. 💅   Sometimes you don't have to mold yourself to the environment you're in.   You can change your environment. ❤️ 🌺 ☮ #hiring #corporate #recruiting #recruitment #hr #humanresources #hiringnow

Creating a safe work environment is key to an employee's ability to succeed in their role. It is upper management's responsibility to help foster that work environment so that everyone including those of color and those with disabilities are given the tools and support needed to be a continued asset to the company and the people in which that company serves. Failure to create a safe environment can lead to decline in work performance and  mental health. Surely the comment made in this video does not foster a positive impact to a person of color. Imagine how similar and consistent comments and actions made to this same employee over the course of a year by their supervisor and direct reports has impacted this employee's personal and work experience. Standing up to a "work bully" isnt always easy and creates unimaginable amounts of anxiety and fear of retaliation (which unfortunately was the case here). What tips/advice would you give to this employee as they search for new employment opportunities? What could this company do to ensure that current employees do not endure that type of treatment?

As employers have rolled out their in-office policies, it may already be time to reassess what kind of environment employees are experiencing while they're there. Resume Builder recently polled workers whose companies have mandated in-office attendance at least one day per week after being fully remote since the pandemic. What they found is that after returning, 30% of respondents reported a toxic company culture, while 21% said they have been victims of bullying and 28% said they have experienced "creepy" behavior — defined by the survey as actions or comments that induce discomfort or fear. For Gen Z respondents between the ages of 18 and 24, these numbers came in even higher: 38% reported they have been bullied and almost half said they have encountered creepy behavior.

Of course, this is difficult to see as a recruiter, because that means less candidates ready to make a move! On the flipside, it's encouraging to see how people are happy where they are, and are carefully choosing their next step, rather than fleeing their current situation because of a negative work environment/poor benefits/toxic management. "Workers are being more strategic about their career moves which is contributing to the 'Big Stay'," Amber Watts shares new Robert Half research that looks at the top reasons less workers are making career moves this first half of the year. YOUR CO-WORKERS AREN'T FAMILY MEMBERS In this part of the world, it is very common to see some people translating our cultural leanings into workplace relationships often with disastrous results. "He's my younger brother's mate," says the midlevel employee about his new IT boss. "She's not my agemate. If not for work, we will have nothing in common." Well, she's your team lead. "The HR manager is just like my big sister." No, she's not. Stop blurring the lines when it comes to work relationships. It is more likely to get you in trouble. It can brew disrespect, encourage favouritism and unfairness, and make co-workers uncomfortable. This isn't advocating that you walk around your office like a zombie. But remain aware that the primary goal is to work to achieve organisational goals. Be friendly, not besties. Be cordial, not confidants. That's the rule of thumb.
