Let’s double down here: Leadership isn’t who or what gets sh!t done. I used to scour stores for books on leadership that reflected what I was trying to talk about. I stopped — you can take a look at most author pictures and bios on the best sellers to guess why — but it’s also simply that I realized leadership and Leadership are two very different things: Leadership is the political chessboard; Where you learn how effective you can be in a system that can adjust only a fragment at a time. leadership is a brew of self awareness, understanding complex systems, individuals & obsitinent stubbornness that makes you believe you can change things even when you’ve failed 100 times. Every person has been a leader at some point in their life and has the capability of being one in the right set of circumstances for them. So if you didn’t get that promotion or you feel like you’ll never get ahead where you are? Maybe you’re in the wrong set of circumstances*. Change the story. Find a place where you can contribute to the narrative. Better yet, find a place where you _want_ to contribute to the narrative. *remember that change is snail pace, and what you see is a lagging indicator (sometimes exponential, depending on company size and source of change); some patience is recommended

Another of the 'asks' of WLN is 'Re-defining Leadership'. For WLN this is about women being the kind of leaders they want to be, wherever and however they want to be leaders. Not being confined by more traditional notions of leadership and being able to bring all of themselves to work in all their identities. We are pleased to be working with FE Sussex to pilot our 'Defining your Leadership - the everyday radical power of kindness, fairness and respect'. The course is based around three elements. Self - how we think and act, what motivates us, leadership - how we want to lead and what we want to achieve and, this is the bit we think makes this course different, context - the social, political and economic context of our lived experiences that shape what we believe and perceive and how we are perceived.
