Is China a threat? In my extensive experience in cybersecurity and as someone who has been under surveillance of various intelligence agencies, the question of whether China poses a significant threat warrants a nuanced discussion. The global spotlight on Chinese companies, such as Huawei, stems from concerns that their technology could facilitate state-sponsored surveillance. This has led many nations to restrict or outright ban the use of Chinese equipment in their critical infrastructure. While the fear of foreign espionage is not unfounded, I am more concerned about the surveillance conducted by our own governments. But let's leave that for another time. Today's reflection was sparked during my drive home in my Polestar electric vehicle—a brand under the ownership of the Chinese conglomerate Geely. As I followed an electric bus, also manufactured by a Chinese company, through the streets of my town, I started to think deeply about the data collection capabilities of such vehicles. European countries, including Denmark where I live, Iceland where I am from, and the United Kingdom, which I frequently visit, are increasingly incorporating Chinese-made electric public transportation vehicles into their systems. These buses come equipped with Wi-Fi, GPS, and a suite of sensors. This raises a critical question: if we are wary of potential surveillance through Huawei's technology, why are we not equally concerned about the data these buses collect? The scope of data these buses can gather is considerable. Wi-Fi access points can map out the city WiFi's, GPS can track routes and stops, and additional sensors can gather extensive environmental and traffic data. This information could be used to map Wi-Fi networks, monitor mobile devices, analyze traffic patterns, and even identify strategic locations and potential evacuation routes in emergencies, or escape routes for an attack. The implications of such data collection are far-reaching. It could provide detailed insights into the busiest areas of a city at various times, changes in traffic flow during events or road closures, and a comprehensive understanding of urban layouts. In the wrong hands, this data could be leveraged for strategic planning, whether for urban development or military purposes. As someone who has been targeted by intelligence surveillance, I can attest to the importance of vigilance against potential foreign threats. However, we must not let this overshadow the need for robust privacy regulations and data security measures within our own borders. The widespread integration of Chinese technology into our daily lives, from smartphones to public transportation, presents complex challenges concerning data privacy and national security.
