But we also made sure that disability inclusion was central to the Olympics too. “For these Games, we wanted to carefully listen to the ecosystem of people with disabilities. Our goal is precisely to provide an experience with as few barriers as possible.” That’s the thinking of French Paralympic swimming champion Ludivine MUNOS who is responsible at Paris 2024 for inclusion and accessibility. Ludivine’s Games integration team has introduced three technologies in venues that make the Games more accessible for spectators with vision impairments. 🏅 The Vision Pad, a tactile tablet for some ball sports that has three main features: a magnet that moves across the tablet and details where the match ball is on the pitch in real-time; the pitch dimensions indented into the tablet so they can be felt; a vibration system that simulates the intensity of the match. 🏅 The Low Vision Helmet, a VR style headset that allows users to zoom in and out of the field of play. In addition, a button on the headset allows users to switch to a mode where they can watch the stadium video feed, which they can zoom in and out of too. 🏅 Audio description. For the first time in the history of the Games, the official Games app is offering an audio description service. This service for the visually impaired is open to all spectators and easy to access through their phone via the official Paris 2024 Games app. Users enter their ticket number and plug in their personal headphones. He is amongst the early testers of this robotic-powered, assistive technology and there are already talks about athletes using them to compete. Cyborg games in the coming decade? 🌟 Stronger & lighter carbon material as well as computer-aided design for better customization has made a huge difference to the prosthetic blades that are used by runners and jumpers; wheelchair design innovation for para-badminton, rugby and basketball as well as the technology used to make cycles steadier and more balanced for para-athletes and their guides. 🌟 Virtual-Reality heads sets for better training acclimitazation for para-athletes as well as to drive more sensitivity and empathy amongst fans by giving them a chance to use VR to feel and seet what it is like to be a para-athlete. 🌟 Accessibility in technology is changing the way people with visual and hearing impairments are consuming the sport, thanks to visual boards with braille incorporated as well as apps with real-time audio and text commentary and high-tech visual boards. 🌟 Organizers are using state-of-the-art cameras to detect closest of photo finishes with devices that capture nearly 40,000 frames per second; using mini autonomous vehicles to pick up and carry discs, balls and javelin sticks for better efficiency and fundamentally, to make the venues physically more accessible and convenient for people with impairments. India's Paralympic Triumphs: A Catalyst for Inclusive Innovation India's recent Paralympic triumphs have shattered records and stereotypes, showcasing the incredible potential of athletes with disabilities. With a historic haul of 29 medals, including 7 golds, at the Paris 2024 Games, India has firmly established itself as a rising power in Paralympic sports. Imagine a world where every athlete, regardless of their physical limitations, has the opportunity to compete at the highest level. A world where people with disabilities can fully engage and unlock their full potential. This vision is becoming a reality thanks to the incredible advancements in assistive technology. To further accelerate the development of innovative assistive solutions, we are hosting the AT Makeathon in collaboration with R2D2 IIT Madras. This collaborative event brings together talented innovators from across the country to work on groundbreaking projects that can transform the lives of people with disabilities. 'Games Wide Open' is the Philosophy of the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games 🥇 The countdown is on...! 🕐 The Paralympic Games kick off in less than a month, from 28 August to 8 September 2024. Paris 2024 is championing accessibility like never before and is offering a range of facilities and solutions adapted to every type of disability. As a result, no fewer than 280,000 tickets for people with disabilities and wheelchair users have gone on sale for the Games. From wheelchair-friendly venues to sensory-friendly zones, the organisers are committed to creating an experience where everyone can enjoy the games comfortably and safely. Here are just a few of the incredible initiatives: -Robby the Robot 🤖: Paris 2024 introduces Robby, a robot that allows disabled young people with a passion for sport who cannot physically take part in the Games to do so from hospital. Two robots will be taking part in the Games, giving eight hospitals the chance to give a number of disabled children a behind-the-scenes look at the Games. -Touch-Sensitive Tablets: Visually impaired fans can follow the game using a touch-sensitive tablet that not only shows the position of the ball live (thanks to a moving magnet) but also lets them feel the intensity of the game through a vibration system. As a result of this device, everyone will be able to fully experience the stadium atmosphere. -Audio Description Service: For the first time ever, spectators can access an audio description service for selected sports sessions via the official Games app. Simply enter your ticket number, plug in your headphones, and experience the action like never before. As we come down off the Paris Olympics high into our half time break before the Paralympics it's a good time to think of the legacy from the games. Many conversations focus on the stadiums. The built infrastructure. Not all legacy is bricks and mortar however. Sometimes it is an investment in a life changing technology. Something that needed a chance to shine on the world stage to show its value. Paris 2024 Revolutionised Olympic Accessibility with Cutting-Edge Tech I love accessible technology and seeing new ways to ensure everyone is included, and Paris 2024 set new standards for accessibility so that everyone could experience the Olympic magic.  From the tactile Vision Pad to the innovative Low-Vision Helmet, technology helped in bringing the games to life for visually impaired fans.  Audio description services enhanced the experience, making sure no one misses a moment of the action.  These advancements mark a significant step towards inclusivity, promising a legacy that hopefully will inspire future events. The Vision Pad is really cool.  It’s a tactile tablet with a moving magnetic ball that visually impaired users could feel, allowing them to track the movement of the ball in sports like basketball, soccer, and rugby.  By running their fingers over the tablet, users could follow the game’s action in real-time. The Low-Vision Helmet offered another layer of engagement.  This VR-like headset let users zoom in on athletes and action, connected to the live broadcast feed of the events.  This technology was especially useful in large venues like the Stade de France, where it helped bring distant action up close. Audio description added yet another layer of accessibility and a vital feature.  Available for 15 sports at the Paris Olympics, it provided detailed commentary on everything happening in the stadium, from movements and atmosphere to colours and actions.  Visually impaired individuals were able to connect to the service via the Paris2024 Olympics app and follow the games with a pair of earphones. These technologies, designed by companies like GiveVision, Touch2See, and Ezymob, exemplified Paris 2024’s commitment to inclusivity, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their abilities, could fully enjoy the Olympic experience. When some brands speak, we listen. So, do brands have a role in shaping the language society uses? Are Paralympians 'elite athletes' or 'participants'? The starting point for brands is empathy. Brands should educate themselves before they go on to educate their audiences. Next, humor. The organisers of the #2024Paralympics are focusing on enhancing accessibility in locations, transportation, and facilities to ensure that athletes, spectators, and support staff with disabilities can fully participate. Some of the key features include: ➡️ Fully accessible public transport, with 100% of the metro stations, buses, trains, and taxis equipped with ramps, lifts, audio and visual announcements, and priority seats for people with disabilities. ➡️ Venues with accessible entrances, seating, toilets, changing rooms, signage, lighting, and sound systems, as well as assistive devices and services, such as wheelchairs, hearing loops, and sign language interpreters. And, all of the official websites, apps, social media etc have been made accessible in different languages, formats and assistive technologies.
