Learning to read and write early in childhood is crucial to ensuring future success in school, work, and life in general. In Virginia, 68% of 4th grade students are not reading at a proficient level and in Richmond, 16% of adults lack the literacy to read a bus schedule, fill out a job application, or help their children with their homework. 📚 In this webinar, local experts will explore the historic and current socio-political contexts around education policy, the impacts of literacy and the efforts to increase literacy rates for residents in our region.

Sorry to be a buzzkill, I see this as a nice, yet overdue, step in the right direction to increase accountability for special education program effectiveness, however, I must note two things that stand out to me. 1. The academic proficiency targets seem astoundingly low. For Reading, the goals for 4th grade, 8th grade, and HS are 8%, 9%, and 7%, respectively, and 10%, 5%, and 1% for math. This can’t be right. 🚩This sounds like extremely low expectations and again sends the message that we are okay with failing students with disabilities. Am I wrong? Someone please correct me here. 2. LEAs can end up in the highest category even if they get 0 points on the academic outcomes targets. Why is this okay? Again, I would love someone to check my math and tell me that I’m wrong here too. If I am right, this is not going to advance outcomes for students with disabilities. Powerful examples of data sharing, data access, and data use at the national, university, and school district levels to understand post-pandemic learning recovery were highlighted at last night’s Harvard Graduate School of Education Askwith Education Forum. The last time I published about sharing education data was in my former role at Harvard – 11 years ago. The last time I practiced data sharing was this week in my current role at Jumpstart. Being back at Harvard and reflecting on what I thought about #EdData 11 years ago, what I do with data now, and how the landscape of education data (and results) has changed in the interim was so meaningful. The results from the Education Recovery Scorecard show large and historically important post-pandemic growth – and lags. The data exist, are publicly accessible, and can be and are being acted on. It is in that action where we will see benefits for children, schools, and society.
