What lies beneath? Appearances can be deceptive. Having been in agricultural use since at least the 1880s, there are no clues on the surface to suggest that this 46-hectare site at Mastin Moor is coal mining legacy land. Plans for 650 new homes and community facilities on the site were approved by Chesterfield Borough Council in December 2023. The proposed development will almost double the size of the existing Mastin Moor settlement providing 650 new homes, a quarter of which will be built to higher adaptable and accessible standards. The project also includes a new elderly care centre, health centre, convenience shops and retail uses.  The development will sit amongst 20 hectares of green, open space for the community, with children’s play areas, informal recreation spaces and naturalistic tree planting to increase biodiversity. Idom Merebrook first became involved with the site over 10 years ago when we produced a desk study and undertook an initial phase of investigation on behalf of Chatsworth & The Devonshire Group. Being underlain by the Pennine Middle Coal Measures, the Mastin Moor site was exploited in the past to access its coal resources. In 2021 we supervised a trial trenching exercise to locate the highwall in areas of the site which were historically mined using open cast methods. Most recently we were appointed to locate a mine shaft for which the Coal Authority held very little information on its condition or exact position. Engaging an experienced contractor, this was done by percussive probing on a 1 m spaced grid. One of our newest recruits, Micaela Martins was on site to supervise the probing undertaken by M. & J. DRILLING SERVICES LIMITED Persistence pays. After repeatedly encountering hard strata, probing eventually identified shaft backfill at the very edge of the 10 m search radius, thus helping to remove that uncertainty for the development.  A successful day for Micaela, not only for locating the shaft, but also for managing to retain both her wellies in the process! #miningengineering #brownfieldregeneration #derbyshire #contaminatedland #coalmining #geotechnicalengineering

The Goonvean #Engine #Trust is the proud owner of a Cornish beam engine. Our engine was built in 1863 by Harveys of Hayle to #pump deep #Cornish tin #mines. In 1910 the engine moved to the Goovean china clay works where it worked until 1956 pumping water out of the clay pit. For over 50 years the engine lay abandoned and forgotten by almost everybody except for a few #enthusiasts. In 2008 the engine was #dismantled and put into #storage to allow the #expansion of the clay pit. The engine has now been acquired by the Goonvean Engine trust who will #preserve this important piece of Cornwall’s engineering #heritage within Cornwall. It is our express intention to restore the engine to #operating condition so that it can be enjoyed by future generations. This engine is the last great Cornish #steam engine.
