Many thanks to our colleague Ingrid Veninger (Assoc Prof, Cinema & Media Arts), Director of the York Motion Media Studio (YUMMS). Her innovative shooting the set course connects students across #YorkUAMPD to learn new techniques in filmmaking, screenwriting and new media creation for narrative cinema. Why is this important?
You may have heard about the need for workforce development in the film industry as well as the many disruptions and industry changes. How do we prepare emerging artists, filmmakers and creatives to succeed and thrive in such an environment? Through deliberate cross-training of skills, techniques and formats that intersect students from across our School with emerging industry opportunities. Success in the creative industries is not a linear pathway, so why are so many of our programs designed like conveyor belts? Courses such as shooting the set with the generous support of Cinespace Studios allows students from across AMPD to apply skills, techniques and ideas from a range of programs to the emerging needs in the screen sector. This kind of cross-training across the arts is what empowers the next generation of creators and builds workforce and sector resilience amid the many ongoing changes. It also supports students in finding community, connection and collaboration with each other.
Kudos, Ingrid for creating the kind of courses and programs that support all our students and their ongoing professional opportunities.

As an indie filmmaker, the journey from concept to premiere is filled with countless challenges and opportunities. While we often focus on the creative and technical aspects of filmmaking, the importance of building strong community and business connections cannot be understated. That's where joining your local Chamber of Commerce comes into play. Here’s why it’s a game-changer for both you and the local business ecosystem:
1. Networking Opportunities: Chambers of Commerce are hubs of local business activity, offering unparalleled opportunities to connect with local business owners, potential sponsors, and supportive community members. These connections can lead to unique collaboration opportunities, funding sources, and local talent willing to contribute to your projects.
2. Visibility: By participating in Chamber events and utilizing their marketing resources, indie filmmakers can significantly increase their visibility within the community. This not only helps in promoting your work but also in establishing your brand as a key player in the local arts scene.
3. Access to Resources: Chambers often provide members with access to business resources, workshops, and seminars that can be invaluable for filmmakers navigating the complexities of running their own production company or seeking to better understand the business side of the industry.
4. Community Support: Joining the Chamber demonstrates your commitment to the local economy and community development. This mutual support fosters a positive environment where businesses and individuals alike are more inclined to support your projects, be it through services, sponsorships, or attendance at your screenings.
5. Advocacy: Chambers of Commerce advocate on behalf of the local business community, including the arts and entertainment sectors. Being a part of this collective voice ensures that the needs and interests of indie filmmakers are represented in local government and policy-making discussions.
Joining Hands for Mutual Growth: In essence, becoming a member of your local Chamber of Commerce opens doors to a symbiotic relationship where both your filmmaking endeavors and the local business community can thrive together. It's about creating a vibrant ecosystem where art meets commerce, leading to shared successes and a stronger, more connected community.
Let's embrace the opportunities that come with being part of our local Chamber of Commerce. Together, we can elevate the narrative of indie filmmaking while contributing to the economic and cultural vitality of our communities.

🎥 In this blog post, we speak to our grantees Rita da Silva & Kurt Shaw, co-founders of Usina da Imaginação, share the findings of their participatory filmmaking project designed to test if collaboration would cultivate empathy among children from four diverse contexts where children find it difficult to overcome the social, economic, and racial divisions endemic to contemporary Brazil.

Reflecting on my journey as an indie filmmaker, the importance of building a sustainable community can't be overstated. The digital landscape has made it challenging for indie filmmakers to thrive, but the power of community offers a beacon of hope.
Networking has been a game-changer for me. I've met incredible people who have provided not just inspiration, but opportunities I wouldn't have encountered otherwise. Coffee meetups and virtual hangouts have sparked collaborations that pushed my projects to new heights.
Here's what worked for me, and what I believe can foster such a community:
Utilize Social Media
I started by joining filmmaker groups on platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn. Sharing my journey and engaging in discussions helped me connect on a deeper level with like-minded individuals.
Organize and Participate in Film Festivals
I co-organized local film festivals. It wasn't just about showcasing talent, but about creating an environment where filmmakers could share, learn, and grow. The feedback and encouragement are invaluable.
Form Alliances with Other Filmmakers
Forming alliances with other indie filmmakers is crucial. It's not about competition but collaboration. Sharing resources, knowledge, and support turns individual struggles into collective success.
Mutual support in our community has been a cornerstone of my growth. There were times I questioned continuing in this field, feeling the financial and emotional strains, but the encouragement from my peers kept my passion alive.
It's about creating spaces where we lift each other up, share resources, and celebrate success. We must remember that together we can achieve more than we ever could alone.

Everything is built for aspiring filmmakers to fail.
I'm talking to:
- Actors
- Directors
- Screenwriters
- Producers
(Believe it or not, producers often get the worst of it).
They want us all clamoring to get picked. They want us spending time and money jostling for a chance to pitch the room.
And that works for 1% of the aspirants.
Which is how they get you.
Do you want to know how I got to the point where I'm developing my fifth feature?
I picked myself. I spent the time and money:
- Learning
- Positioning
- Researching
- Gathering resources
The thousands you spent on screenwriting competitions, I put into producing actual films.
The thousands you spent on film festival submissions, I spent on organizing my own national screening tour.
The hopes and dreams you neatly packaged, and sent off for someone else to judge, I put onto the page and the screen.
I'm using some dramatic language, but to be clear, I'm not judging anyone. Everything was built to work this way.
I've fallen into the trap at points, too, especially when I was younger.
(And it's still prudent to selectively pitch yourself within the established systems.)
I just think those systems should and can be more equitable.
The technology and the strategies and the access exist to empower yourselves. YouTubers and TikTokers and streamers are already doing it. And they're leapfrogging many of us.
Granted, these possibilities don't erase the inequality that's embedded within our economy.
But I do believe in small, measured progress that adds up. I believe in abundance, and in helping one another.
AKA, the first virtual Fair Share Films meetup is this Friday, 9/13, at 10AM EST.
Attendance is free, donations accepted but not expected.
We'll go around the "room" and share what we do, what we need help with, and how we can help. Other stuff in the works as well, soon.
This has been working when we've done it IRL at the Vermont International Film Festival space in Burlington. Thanks to our small but mighty local community, and the organizing efforts of Vermont Production Collective.
Our goal with Fair Share is to chase sustainability for middle class filmmakers.
It starts like this, with a few people in a room.
(Digital rooms are a thing, too).
Then you put in the effort, day by day, to grow from there.
DM me or Rebecca De Ornelas for the registration link.
PS: Yes, we will talk this Friday about moving the time next month, for our PST pals.

Just as athletes hit the gym to refine their physical prowess, us filmmakers must practice our craft to sharpen our skills and elevate our artistry.
In the world of filmmaking, the ability to perform under pressure and deliver exceptional results is paramount. Just like athletes train relentlessly for crucial competitions, we too must invest time in perfecting our techniques, readying ourselves for those pivotal projects.
Think of it as honing our filmmaking muscles – consistently pushing boundaries, refining our techniques, and mastering our craft. Each practice session serves as a stepping stone towards excellence, preparing us for the challenges that lie ahead.
Recently, I delved deep into perfecting my lighting setups, particularly experimenting with achieving a "day for night" look. It's a technique where we shoot in broad daylight but create the illusion of dusk or nighttime.
Through practice and experimentation, I've honed my skills to create compelling visual narratives that captivate audiences. And I'm thrilled to share the fruits of my labor with you all! Let's continue to push boundaries, challenge ourselves, and strive for excellence in our craft. Together, let's embrace the power of practice and unlock our full potential as filmmakers.
