As a clinician, we are well positioned to enact on the ideas we have for healthcare ...IF we allow ourselves. The problem comes when there's a big gap between clinical knowledge and technical knowledge of what's truly possible, in what timeframe, and how well (at least in my experience) This is an issue I've personally had several times over as I tend to say "I don't know how to code" as a proxy for my own self-inflicted doubts However, within the past few years, learning from a cross-functional team (this past weekend as an example) helps you realize that what is truly within your capabilities on manifesting an idea is really NOT THAT FAR OFF! It's a collaborative approach. Clinician don't necessarily have to learn how to code, but being familiar with relevant technicalities is helpful. Similarly, software engineers don't need to be clinicians, but learning relevant clinical/industry knowledge is also helpful! Many ideas are squandered day one by a lot of this self-doubt, but are easily enabled with the right team. Which makes me wonder: Why don't schools provide opportunities for cross-functional collaboration between clinical students and other non-clinical students? (i.e., software engineers, business analyst, finance, marketing, etc.) I was impressed how quickly and well we were able to take a healthcare problem, create an AI demo product, formulate a business model, and then pitch it in front of judges all within 8 hours!! For those doubting your ideas, reach out and network with those who complement the gaps of knowledge/skills you lack and let the rest be history! Anyways, thought storm over! I had these thoughts that I couldn't shake off from this weekend until I got tagged in your post, Ian Alrahwan, and decided to just write about it. For anyone in Dallas or the surrounding areas, check out Health Wildcatters and their Texas Healthcare Hackathon for next year. Great opportunity, great experience, and perfect way to scratch that irresistible itch for an idea you may have.
Who would wake up at 8am on a Saturday to compete in the 2024 Texas Healthcare Challenge hosted by the Health Wildcatters in Dallas, Texas? Me and my new friends Akash Patel, DPT, FRCms, CSSC, Rashi Singh, Raj Bhadalia, Biru Dash, Kaitlin Roberson, Michael Mong, M.D. and mentor Gareth Hughes We built an AI-chat bot for chronic low back pain intended for use as an assistant to physical therapists and PM&R physicians. Special thanks to Ismail Pelaseyed of the startup Superagent (YC W24) for walking me through how to adjust Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) with a synthetic medical history and limit answers to Mayo Clinic and high-impact pain management PubMed articles.
