Underdiagnosis and undertreatment are consistent themes we see with alcohol use disorder (AUD) for many reasons. First, alcohol is so normalized in our society that the slippery slope of addiction is much harder to recognize. Also, HCPs lack the education. A 2021 NIH study showed that even when people exhibited many of the criteria listed in the DSM-5 (as shown in this article) only 1.6% had been prescribed any of the 3 FDA-approved meds to combat cravings, etc. Other recent data shows that even when patients with AUD enter the healthcare system, only 6% received treatment. Fortunately, there is a movement to support people who want to change their drinking patterns before there are serious mental, emotional, and physical health consequences. Like other lifestyle-related chronic diseases, these personal accountability actions will do far more for our health & wellbeing than expecting the solution to come from others. #alcoholfreelife #recoverycoach #healthiswealth
