Our move away from carbon-neutrality to focus on emission reductions and the journey towards Net Zero, is another step change in our approach to reducing our impact on the environment and the effects of climate change. JCDecaux New Zealand's 2023 Toitū certification, mentioned in the article attached shows that we achieved another 3% reduction in emissions, taking our overall performance to 63% below our benchmark year. We're pretty proud of that, especially when we are concurrently growing our business with a double digit increase in revenue. This gives us confidence that we are on course to achieve our 2030 targets and our overall goal of Net Zero by 2050. Working with the JCDecaux team in New Zealand and Australia, and being part of Ad Net Zero and Scope3 has been enlightening, to say the least. The volume of work done so far is huge but we all know there is a lot more to do. Collectively we are committed to a more sustainable advertising ecosystem and a heathier, more sustainable future for our planet. Calling out the efforts of Alexandra Heaven Jose Sanz, Jeremy Vary, Teina Bhana...and many more. https://lnkd.in/gkPkg5kP

Arenas and other large assembly venues around the world host millions of fans annually at concerts and sporting events, resulting in massive social and environmental impacts. A typical National Football League game, for instance, sends around 35 tons of waste to landfills. Until recently, owners and operators didn’t have a clear roadmap toward sustainability, making net zero operations seem out of reach. But a new platform called GOAL (Green Operations and Advanced Leadership) is changing that. #GOAL is helping venues set sustainability goals, track progress in areas such as water consumption and waste generation, and provides intangible benefits like networking opportunities and access to industry experts. The Paris 2024 Organising Committee's rent, reduce, reuse, and recycle approach to this year's games has set a new standard for global sporting events. Paris 2024 - Comité d'organisation des Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques de 2024 aims to reduce carbon emissions from the London 2012 and Rio 2016 games by 50%, with a budgeted 1.58 million tCO2e—equivalent to powering over 200,000 homes' energy usage for a year. How will they achieve this? By measuring previous games' footprints, the committee pinpointed carbon hotspots such as construction, furnishing, catering, and travel, applying innovative solutions to reduce their impact and conserve resources. For example, previous Olympics, such as London 2012, saw significant carbon emissions from new buildings. This year, by renting 95% of the infrastructure, Paris 2024 is substantially lowering its carbon footprint. At Planet Mark, we have a saying. You can't manage what you don't measure. That's why we are proud to support businesses by calculating their carbon footprints so they can make informed decisions about reducing them. Leveraging carbon data to support your sustainability journey is the only way to make measurable and meaningful carbon cuts. Ready to minimise your environmental impact? Start by measuring your footprint with us. Find out more here. https://lnkd.in/eeasNxkY

#EarthWeek2024 having come to a close, our commitment to sustainability continues. Here are some of the ways KSA members are making a difference, over, under and beyond the buildings of Kendall Square: OVER: Looking for a breath of fresh air in Kendall Square? Look no further than the rooftop of 500 Kendall Street. BioMed Realty's sustainable design includes rooftop gardens, which foster biodiversity and improve air quality. This green haven complements its commitment to solar energy and eco-friendly practices, making 500 Kendall a model for sustainable development. UNDER. Boston Properties (BXP)'s Life Sciences Center is a first-of-its-kind project featuring an underground substation, commercial buildings, housing, and green space. This collaboration tackles energy needs while creating a sustainable community hub in Kendall. BEYOND. Google is aggressively pursuing net zero emissions by 2030, aiming to slash absolute emissions by 50% and invest in carbon removal solutions. Its commitment extends beyond Google’s footprint, with initiatives like the Chromebook repair program promoting a circular economy, sustainable products like Project Sunroof empowering users, and local partnerships providing cities with tools and resources to combat climate change.

🌍 As we kick off Climate Week here in New York, I'm en route to the model city of Copenhagen for SoDA: The Digital Society’s Annual Members Meeting, where sustainability is also a major topic - particularly through a #digital lens. Though I’ll miss the great programming here in NYC (and the irony of burning some fossil fuel on the plane ride over isn’t lost on me) it’s important to recognize the strides being made in sustainable design and urban development globally. Denmark is a damn good place to start, where firms like Henning Larsen BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group Cobe NORD Architects among others have been a model for sustainability-focused design, architecture and their own firm’s commitments for years. Their work should make it obvious, but the truth is that the world already knows how to design and engineer sustainable buildings - it’s the global commitment that varies drastically. Listening to a recent podcast with Scott Galloway @profgalloway interviewing sustainability advocate Ayana Elizabeth Johnson on all things energy, she highlighted a similar truth: we already know how to produce renewable energy—it’s not an innovation issue, but an adoption challenge. This is mirrored in the book Electrify by Saul Griffith, where he urges hyper vigilance around the purchasing decisions we make, lest any new car, stove, heater, energy supplier, etc. that’s not clean and green will exist as a rationalization to continue to hold onto dirty energy infrastructure and services. Back in Brooklyn, I reflected on this while sitting in traffic on Flatbush Avenue coming home from another kids soccer game (TBH, in my gas-powered car… working on the change). I was staring at Alloy Development's new electric building, 505 State Street, which is the city's first all-electric skyscraper, disconnected from carbon-based fuel sources like gas and fuel oil. At the corner of the building, a floor or two above the ground, is a giant orange electric plug. It’s not just a quirky sculpture, but a bold declaration that this building isn’t contributing to the carbon crisis—it’s a signal for the city to follow suit. Buildings need to telegraph their commitments to sustainability - green Bat signals. Doing our part as individual consumers is important of course - if not in quantity of impact, at least in community building and mindshare. I did purchase a % of biofuel power for my SAS - Scandinavian Airlines flight today, which was easy to add during online check in - nice one. But, TBF I also had ChatGPT clean this post up, which likely spun some servers in a data center somewhere, probably not powered with green energy.) Life isn't about absolutism, but hopefully a net positive. The real impacts will come from large corporations committing to cleaner energy sources, operations and infrastructure. Hopefully, the political and corporate leadership at the United Nations this week will make some headway. That’s it for now 🔌 Here's to pushing greener. 🍏
