It's excellent to see the light continues to be shone on bad practices like this. Sadly, this is simply a continuation of the cat and mouse game buyers will have with publishers. In this case the subdomain could be blocked but there are many other methods we have observed that absolutely bypass this and have seen other publishers utilize other workarounds. To mitigate this from the buy side across devices and environments, you would need a team working non stop. Some if it isn't even possible due to lack of capabilities in buying platforms. Ultimately without enhancements to buyer tool kits across verification providers, the SSP and DSP, there's a myriad number of ways this will continue to proliferate. #programmatic #adtech #media #digitalmedia

Fascinating article and discovery by Adalytics. A must-read for anybody in digital advertising and a serious eye-opener for any marketer. A few excerpts: “Forbes appears to have set up a dedicated sub-domain - called www3.forbes.com, which appears to have a very different ad serving experience relative to the “normal” www.forbes.com sub-domain. A reader viewing an article on the normal sub-domain may see about 3-10 ads in an article, whereas reading the www3 variant exposes the reader to approximately 201+ ad impressions in a single page view session.” “One consumer was shown 27 New York Times subscription ads and 201+ ads total while viewing a 52 slide slideshow on the “www3.” Forbes subdomain. The New York Times paid an effective cumulative CPM of $60.39 to serve ads to that one consumer.” “Certain buyers who explicitly block the “www3.” sub-domain were confirmed to have their ads served on this sub-domain…”. I only have a thousand questions after reading it, chief among them: ‘Is Forbes the only major publisher out there engaging in these practices, or are others doing the same?’ #TimeToCheckWhereTheseHardEarnedAdDollarsReallyGo
