I’m happy to share some key takeaways from two projects I worked on during my junior year at UNC Chapel Hill, each providing a deep dive into strategic communication and economic analysis within the sports industry. These projects significantly deepened my understanding and enthusiasm for the intersection of economics, advertising, and sports. 🏀 In EXSS 324: Finance and Economics of Sport, my team was assigned to conduct a case study on the Charlotte Hornets. This group project involved a thorough SWOT analysis—examining the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats—of the team’s economic strategies and branding efforts. With guidance from Wayne G. McDonnell, Jr., M.B.A., we analyzed the current operations and developed solutions to enhance the Hornets' economic performance. This exploration not only broadened my understanding of sports economics but also inspired me to continue studying the Hornets in my subsequent coursework. 📊 Building on this experience, I focused again on the Charlotte Hornets for a final project in MEJO 531: Case Studies in Public Relations. This project was dedicated to elevating the brand visibility of the Hornets, with strategies designed to engage with relevant pop culture, enhance community involvement, and strengthen media relations. Under the guidance of Lightning (Joe) Czabovsky, this project highlighted the pivotal role of advertising and public relations in the sports market. 🌟 Deepening my engagement with the Hornets franchise through these sequential projects was immensely rewarding. Now is the time to pursue that next degree to help you move up in the sports world! Should I get a Masters or Doctorate degree? A question that many people ask and few that people answer. Depending on your answer, your career and life path may be changed forever. Many people who want to work in sports in some capacity are unsure what kind of degree they may need. The Master’s and MBA degrees are the next step for anyone who has completed a Bachelor degree and is looking to work in sports administration, coaching, operations, director of marketing, many agent positions and more. Earning a Masters or MBA can increase your earning potential, make yourself more marketable, and help you land a promotion at your current or future job.  A Doctorate degree is one of the best ways to showcase yourself as a true expert in a specific field and stand out among the rest of the crowd. Careers in sports for Doctorate degrees include facility management, sports law, marketing, executive positions with an organization and education. As of 2018, just 4.5% of the US population has a Doctorate degree and you could be the next one. What’s the difference between a Ph.D and EdD? Great question! The Ph.D is a research based degree that has an additional capstone requirement that the EdD degree does not have. The biggest difference between the two programs is the time it takes to complete them, the Ph.D. tends to be a longer program than the EdD. Sports Management Worldwide (SMWW) has a long-standing partnership with Concordia University of Chicago (CUC) to help provide graduate degree programs that put students on the path to their dream job in sports. The Masters in Sports Leadership is 30 credit hours and the MBA program is 36 credit hours. The Ph.D is 67 credit hours and the EdD is 61 credit hours. Both degrees can take as little as 4 years to complete. Alumni from the CUC Masters in Sports Leadership and the MBA programs include Dei Lynam, G-League Broadcaster and longtime NBA Broadcast veteran, Fernando Noriega, LA Rams Strength and Conditioning coach, John Ross, NBA Video Coordinator, Shane Brady, NFL & NBA Agent, and Kreigh Warkentein, UNLV Assistant Director of Athletics. The CUC program offers a Ph.D and EdD program for a Doctorate in Sports Leadership. A few notable names that have completed our program are Dr. Nick Nurse, Philadelphia 76ers head coach, Dr. Stephanie Lovingood, Director of Activation for the Phoenix Suns and Mercury, and Dr. Adrian Griffin, Milwaukee Bucks’ Head Coach. Doesn’t it feel like all we talk about these days is AI? It tops every agenda now – from Davos to Dayton. Yes, we need to take it seriously and prepare: jobs will go away and many more will change – but how? As technology does more of the work on our behalf – for better or worse – distinctly human capabilities like creativity, critical thinking, clarity of expression, and caring for human experience will increasingly become the “hard” skills. Are we ready? Thanks to Michael Elliott and Emily Cameron Griffen for having me back to Amherst College (seriously, twist my arm…) to share a perspective on how a Liberal Arts education will prepare today's students for leadership in the future – in careers, yes – and also in life and as citizens of an increasingly complex society.

This year in the office sweep I am secret Santa to our Loughborough intern. Maybe 'not so secret' Santa now! However, I thought this was worth a post....I have bought him one of the must-reads for anyone entering the sports business: The Godfather's, 'What they don't teach you at Harvard Business school'. Rather cheekily I decided to read it again before wrapping it and, as well as enjoying the many pearls of wisdom, I was struck by these unexpected, but valuable words, "A calendar in the hands of the right salesman, can be a potential sales weapon....Many of our sales efforts are timed to take advantage of major sports events" Aligned to the chapter on 'opportunism', Mr. McCormack (RIP), would want me to- neh, expect me to, point out that MEI members receive a regularly-updated 5-year major sports events calendar as part of their membership which, with perfect circularity, is researched by the aforementioned Loughborough intern!
