A second Trump administration would mean continued erosion to the constitutional foundations of our democracy, making it harder to vote. As always, litigation would be a key tool in the ACLU’s response. The ACLU has extensive experience challenging restrictive and discriminatory voting laws in court. We, as ppl of color, didn’t get the right to vote by entitlement, but by going to never/ending battle for every single civil and human right we have secured. Voting, stratified by race and gender, restricted access. From 1870 to 2024 our citizenship remains in jeopardy from SCOTUS to private citizens who are relentlessly resistant to the oneness of humanity. White suffragists did not campaign for Native women’s citizenship rights when the 19th Amendment was passed. Indigenous, Asian, Black, Latino voting rights, now in a minority-majority nation, will only be gained when ppl work together in unity and common cause. H.R. 14-The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act can steer us toward a true democracy.

Congressman John Lewis wanted us to be involved in the democratic process. He fought for the right to vote. He fought to expand voting rights. But the “right” to vote isn’t enough.
