Quick reminder that Isrsel doesn't even care for its most precious citizens that were the reason the country was founded. Israel is home to approximately 140,000 Holocaust survivors. - 1 in 3 live in poverty. Many rely on food donations from non-governmental nonprofits to survive. - In the past year, there was a 40% increase in requests by survivors for help paying their electricity bills. - Since 2020, they've seen a 66% increase in food donation recipients. - The Israeli government spent 1.2 Billion (converted to USD) on Holocaust survivor stipends and 24.3 Billion on its "defense" military force in 2021. - Only 65% of Holocaust survivors in Israel receive any financial support from their country. - 6,000 Holocaust survivors have been waiting for public housing for years, some of them up to 15 years! - 1 in 5 Holocaust survivors in Israel must choose between food or other necessities. - Much of the financial support focuses solely on Jews that survived ghettos and concentration camps, leaving survivors from other violence (such as the former USSR) to dig through garbage. Many who were orphaned refugees born in other places that were not technically under Nazi rule are not considered "survivors" despite their lives being shaped from birth by the Holocaust. - Many survivors can't qualify for support because they don't have documentation. Ex: their homes were burnt, they fled with no possessions, they have no living eyewitnesses to corroborate stories from nearly 100 years ago, or they were a young child with no surviving family. This isn't new either; you can find articles about it from 1999, 2004, 2010, 2014...It's been a known issue. And as the number of survivors dwindle, their medical needs (and associated costs) increase...just like the cost of living in Israel continues to increase. We Stand Together As 2023 comes to a close, the events in Israel bring back 80 years of memories – of the Holocaust and the pogroms that devastated the Jewish communities across the Middle East. But back then, we had no country; we could not and did not defend ourselves. Today, we have our Jewish Homeland, Israel. In October, we experienced the greatest catastrophe for the Jewish people since the Holocaust. Terrorists tried to break our spirit, kill our children, scare us. They tried to dismantle our homes and communities. They will never succeed because we all stand together. Holocaust Memorial Day 2024 I am the daughter of a Libyan Jew who had to flea in the 1960's due to anti Jewish riots. We found refuge in the UK which we will always be grateful for. I cannot begin to imagine what it must have been like to have been in a Jew in the 1930s and 1940s and to have lived through the atrocities of the Holocaust, lost family members, witnessed unspeakable acts and survived. There are so few survivors now and it is incumbent on all of us Jew and non Jews to hear first hand testimonies if you can and educate yourself and others. We must raise awareness of religious persecution to stop it happening again in the future. Sadly we're seeing anti-semitism on the rise and the persecution of people of other religions too. Nothing can be compared to what happened in the Holocaust - it was the darkest stain on world history although the barbarity and evil of the massacre on the 7th October has shocked the world. We must learn what happened and how Nazism was allowed to flourish throughout Europe. Sadly since the Holocaust there have been further genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. Beyond the war crimes of #HamasisISIS against Israel and against their own people, the world must fight them to save Palestinian children. Not only do they steal their donation money, future and hope. Not only do they use them as human shields and hide behind them. Not only do they ruin their childhood with war after war. We are witnessing a new Holocaust against Palestinians, Some people still don't dare to say that Killing more than 20,000 Civilians, ~10,000 of them kids, starving and torturing more than 1,000,000 People, destruction of everything in a full blockade, is Genocide!
