"AI & Datascience Bootcamp 4 Women & Minorities" is not just a capacity development initiative. It was a labour of love, passion and commitment to the cause of empowering women, changing the system and striving towards a gender equal world! ❓What is it? A hybrid training program specifically recognising the barriers women face in the tech field and supporting them to overcome these obstacles. The intent and priority are to upskill women irrespective of their academic background or coding knowledge. The core idea: anyone can learn Data Science and AI. 🔥The standout component of the Bootcamp are the capstone projects that are developed by these amazing participants to demonstrate their skills. WOW!! #RunCodeLikeABoss When Luisa Olaya, my co-conspirator came to me with the initial idea, we knew it would be something special. We crafted, moulded & were intentional about the program we created - which can be adapted to any country ecosystem, and for different cohorts (youth, professionals, young mothers, C-suite, LGBTQIA+, etc.) We gave our all to pilot, which turned out to be am amazing success with a committed partner Intel Corporation who have been with us on this journey. The South Africa pilot, led by our passionate service provider at Move Beyond Consulting also made this a success. Each iteration sees us taking learnings & knowledge & refining the program. It has now scaled to Ghana & Rwanda, with Uganda underway and Indonesia to follow next year, and a mini component in Equador. There enable the countries in which FAIR Forward project does not operate but which have Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH (GIZ) offices, we are crafting a fully open source training to empower those projects & teams to conduct this themselves, for their ecosystems. 🎉 We are very pleased to announce that our paper, "Decoding Online Hate in the United States: A BERT-CNN Analysis of 36 Million Tweets from 2020 to 2022," co-authored with Shasank Sekhar Pandey and Mahboobeh Zangiabady, has been accepted for presentation at The 12th IEEE International Workshop on Semantic Computing for Social Networks and Organization Sciences. This study addresses the complex and pressing issue of online hate speech, which has surged in recent years, particularly during the significant events of 2020-2022. By collecting and analyzing 36 million tweets from the United States through a BERT-based Convolutional Neural Network (BERT-CNN), we focused on classifying instances of hate speech, finding as relevant classes ethnicity, gender, and nationality. Our collaborative effort aims to contribute to a nuanced understanding of online hate speech's nature and scope during these critical years. "Weaponisation of friendship" ⚠️ Flooding the zone ... ⚠️ Concerted attacks on Women, Minorities .... 4️⃣ Not surprisingly there is no one single (silver bullet) solution. By 2023, over 120 zettabytes of data had been collected worldwide, but less than 1% of it is actually used! 🌐💻 Institutions struggle to process structured data to support important decisions, causing them to fall behind large corporations. Madelon Hulsebos, a tenure-track researcher joining CWI's Database Architectures group this fall, aims to empower people to make independent decisions based on structured data. She does this through the 5-year DataLibra project, for which she received an NGF AiNed Fellowship grant from NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek). Congratulations! 🎉 To democratize insights from structured data, Hulsebos aims to improve current AI techniques. Artificial intelligence is effective at analyzing unstructured data, but less so in structured data applications. To address this, she is exploring Table Representation Learning. Yesterday, we attended the Women in Data Science (AI & ML) Sweden conference at Epicenter Stockholm and online. Remarkable speakers from various sectors, including industry and academia, imparted their knowledge and perspectives. It was truly inspiring to see how the field is evolving in #Sweden, and how #women play a big role in this growth. We thank WiDS for organizing this free event that allows participants to meet and learn from women who are both starting in the field of ML as well as women who have been there for a long time and built awesome careers. Some takeaways from WiDS: 🔸 The importance of having diverse teams with people from different backgrounds working together when building ML solutions 🔸 The value of research/ academia working closely with the industry 🔸 We got an introduction to topics like NRT data processing and knowledge graphs  🔸 The advancements within different fields of ML and AI, and how women are playing a big role in it 🔸 Thoughts and examples of where generative AI is moving and how it’s being incorporated within the finance sector in Sweden. #WiDS2024 #modulai #women #machinelearning
