I was fortunate to spend the last month in Vietnam, a fascinating country, that has had a traumatic and troubled past, but now excited by its growth opportunities. Whilst I cannot even begin to get below the surface by being a tourist, what struck me was the energy and passion that the people I met had for the future, a belief. Passion and belief in a positive outcome can be quite contagious. However, the harnessing of this into the business strategic goal can be challenging. The uncertainty I would have for Vietnam’s growth strategy, and for any business that is coming out of some turmoil or plateaued, is that do the passion and values of your people align to the strategic goals of your business? What is abundantly clear is that the majority Vietnam culture is ‘family first’, it is not driven by the desire for more money or growth, whilst welcome, it is secondary. As I look at business’s that have plateaued, there is a need for alignment on the ‘employee experience’ to enable the delivery of a scalable business. Are their passions and drivers aligned to the business strategic goal? Is there a clear method to identify these skills and passions, to harness them in a way that enables them to achieve the business strategic goal. Too often the gap between what the leadership team’s desire as strategic goals cannot be translated into how to maximise the employee experience, the people that are expected to do the work to deliver these strategic goals. There is an 'imbalance' between the desire for a great Customer Experience and the experience of the employees. Let’s be clear the customer experience is key, I loved Vietnam because the authenticity of the people gave me that great customer experience. However, for scalable growth it is about finding that critical balance between Customer Experience and Employee experience. I will now follow more closely Vietnam on their growth journey and how they wrestle with the challenge for economic growth with the values of their people, an interesting conundrum! Each landmark we visited, a beacon of hope and freedom, demonstrated how narratives have shaped America's identity. This rich historical context provides a fertile ground for American companies to craft stories that resonate globally. Take McDonald's for instance, which redefined fast food into a source of joy with Happy Meals, or Nike, transforming athletic wear into emblems of victory. The storytelling extends to digital influencers like MrBeast whose rise to fame involves pushing boundaries as an everyday person with Crohn’s disease. Similarly, Roblox empowers children to explore and create new worlds, emphasizing creativity and community. These brands illustrate that consumers seek narratives that transcend product utility, resonating across diverse cultures. This principle is not limited to consumer-facing giants but is equally vital for startups. The concept of narrative market fit is crucial, playing a key role in not just engaging customers, but also in motivating employees and appealing to investors. When a brand doesn't evolve its story to align with changing environments, as BlackBerry experienced by not evolving its narrative as the secure business communication tool amidst the growing demand from everyday consumers, companies risk losing relevance, eventually facing decline. This insight compels us to consider: How are we mentoring startups to pivot their narratives in line with market shifts? Furthermore, what narrative is Singapore crafting in this global arena? As a nation increasingly leaning onto innovation, are we effectively conveying a story that reflects our unique identity and value on the world stage?
