As a Tahoe Basin resident I am thrilled to see Fire Aside being deployed across 2 states and 5 fire agencies thanks to the Tahoe Fund and Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation, along with organizations leaning in to use innovative tools to solve big problems. Implementing strategies to significantly reduce structure-to-structure conflagration has never been more important in light of the elevated levels of wildfire risk to communities. There is little doubt that society has entered into a new era where wildfire exposes and capitalizes on every vulnerability, particularly those in the built environment. We need to be asking ourselves everyday whether legacy programs are keeping up with the rapidly changing conditions we are now facing. The threats and potential losses of community risk reduction programs that have not adapted to the current wildfire paradigm are too high, and a business as usual approach will only lead to the same unacceptable losses. Tahoe has just taken one important step towards a resilient future, and in conjunction with the powerful analysis tools being used in Tahoe such as LandTender (Vibrant Planet) and implementation tools like BurnBot, Inc. our community risk reduction toolbox is amplified with technology and innovation. Focusing on the mitigations that matter most in the highest risk areas of a community will result in the best outcomes. Co-benefits of implementing a strategy that prioritizes these mitigations include creating a safe work environment for firefighters, more successful fire suppression efforts, ensuring residents are able to safely evacuate during emergencies, reduced economic impacts to local communities, fewer emissions from the combustion of hazardous materials and vegetation, preservation of the natural environment, and a more stable insurance market, to name a few. The Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team has a track record for early adoption and success implementing cross jurisdictional projects at scale, and this is no exception. We often have two choices. One - Do nothing (Ex. Yard work, going to the gym). Two - Try to do something. Anything. In this case, I'm going with #2. I have been inspired by 4 outstanding change-makers. Each of them possess insightful knowledge and raw passion for forestry. They are mostly retired but still want to have an active role in aiding BC forests. I am often not the smartest guy in the room but I recognize good ideas when I hear them. Each of them has brought proven ideas to forest fire mitigation. Ideas that would have a demonstrative effect on forest fires in this province. A small team wants to bring these ideas to light (See #2). We can with your help. Please understand. This is not criticism of the brave people who fight fires every year. This is about an opportunity to rethink our policies and processes proactively. Instead of reactive. The greatest organizations are constantly in search of more information to make themselves and the people within - better. I am sure the people who create policy around forest fire mitigation think the same. Nobody has all the answers. What a way to end the year - seeing a few of my worlds collide in the most spectacular fashion! The River Ise Partnership (a collaboration between Wicksteed Charitable Trust, Nene Rivers Trust CIO and Environment Agency) recently completed the River Ise project. Despite the usual project challenges (delays, budgetary pressure, adverse weather...) this project has; - reconnected a lowered floodplain that greatly reduces flood risk to properties upstream (a very real risk given since completion we've seen 5 '1 in 5 year' rainfall events - and yes, I know that's not how statistics work, Alice Hickman!) - created new, richer habitats in a SSSI that will flourish in the coming years - brought two charities and the EA together to show what can be achieved with a clear vision and commitment to good outcomes And all on a bit of old railway land (you can see my beloved Midland Mainline poking it's nose in below - photo courtesy of Viktor Tzikas at the Nene Rivers Trust, 2 weeks ago)! Following seasons of devastating wildfires in California, reforestation efforts are more critical than ever. Today, NFWF and USDA Forest Service announced $53 million in grants to protect and restore forests and watersheds in California. Awarded through the California Forests and Watersheds program, nine projects will focus on improving forest health and watersheds through post-fire restoration efforts, providing sustainable and lasting ecological benefits, protecting communities in and around federally protected public lands, and encouraging shared stewardship of USFS lands. Ok, so what projects have federal funds made possible to further the #HumanRightToWater? 📍Texas colonias Settled in the 1950s and ‘60s, many colonias along the Texas-Mexico border still don’t have running water or sewer service and instead rely on trucked-in water stored in plastic tanks for bathing and washing, and bottled water for drinking and cooking 🚰🍳 Now a collaboration between local, nonprofit (including Environmental Defense Fund), and state leaders is bringing more than $4 million in funding to address drinking and wastewater needs in rural communities in Presidio County, Texas. Some of the funds will make it possible to dig deep wells that can access groundwater and then pipe it to homes.
