Navigating Through the Traffic of Career and Life In the busy state of my career path, like the wide range of the city I call home, the roads are always crowded. Here, the journey from intern to seasoned professional resembles driving through less of a smooth highway and more rushing-to-get-where-you're-going-roulette trying to avoid potholes. My initiation into the world of driving was unconventional, to say the least. Around age 13, my daddy, a strong advocate of the "throw them in the deep end and hope they swim" method, decided I should drive to school. The route was similar to driving along the narrow path up to Lookout Mountain/Ruby Falls in Tennessee. I might be fascinated by large sets of numbers, but I'm afraid of heights! However, this taught me more about persistence and overcoming fear than any classroom lecture ever could. My dad's advice, "just put your foot on the gas, you'll get there," became a mantra, not just for driving, but for life. Moving to a major city as an adult introduced me to a new level of vehicular chaos. The roads were like a maze of endless traffic, and at first glance it was exciting. No one prepared me for the unpredictable drivers and the constant threat of law enforcement ready to puncture my driving license with yet another ticket hole (a long, speedy story). Yet, these challenges on the road mirrored those in my career. As an accountant with years many of experience, navigating complex financial landscapes where technology advancement is a speed bump. In the professional realm, much like on the motor speedway, we encounter a variety of drivers: the speedsters racing toward their goals, the overly cautious ones creeping along, and the indecisive lane-switchers. Mastering the art of navigating this environment required a mocha Frappuccino and espresso shot blend of confidence in their own abilities to win today's race. My career, much like my driving record, has been a series of exciting detours and unexpected stops. It's a roller-coaster that teaches resilience, creativity, and the importance of keeping your eyes on the road—or in this case, the balance sheet. For anyone standing at the intersection of uncertainty in their career or life’s path, remember: the journey may be filled with traffic jams and confusing roundabouts, but a lot of determination, and perhaps a good insurance policy, you'll make it to your destination. Just don't forget to enjoy the scenic route every now and then. After all, who knows? You might just discover a new shortcut or, at the very least, a decent coffee shop along the way. I may not have sat for the CPA exam, but sometimes when you're foot is constantly on the peddle, I feel like I'm sitting for it everyday. Navigating life's traffic makes you an expert at handling anything—just maybe not at parallel parking.

Golf....some days are all smiles and some days aren't! Prentice took this picture with Natalie and I right after she competed in the GA High School 6A State Tournament. She was "lucky" enough to qualify and ended up in the Top 25 as a Freshman! If you've ever competed in sports, especially golf, you know that smiles aren't always the easiest thing to come by. You hit a great shot, then a bad shot. You have a good round and then you have a bad round. Regardless of the outcome, you end up spending time rehashing what could have been, replaying shots or specific plays in your mind...only to be frustrated. Prentice is no different, and what you will often hear me preach to Pren is "You are only as good as your NEXT shot!" or "How much practice did you put into that particular shot/scenario?" I know this is a weird parallel, but just like in insurance and risk management "You are only as good as your NEXT claim." (Claims are going to happen folks) If you don't take the opportunity to learn from your past experiences and then train to improve the future outcomes.....You will continue to get the same or worst results! Yeah you may get lucky and "hit a good shot" or "find a hot market", but those moments are fleeting. Quit showing up to the course and getting pissed off when you shoot a 100.... Quit allowing your broker to show up at your insurance renewal time and Quit thinking that you only have to think about insurance once a year....especially if you expect the results to be different.....if you aren't willing to learn from your mistakes and make legitimate improvements then you WILL get the same results over and over! Football season is here again, and every year I find myself sharing this picture. It’s become a bit of a tradition. I usually post it with a touch of humor, saying, “Look at me, a total scrub!” I probably played a total of 20 plays during my senior year, and even now, I still can't quite explain how I ended up with the coveted #4 jersey. 👊🏻 This year, I’ve been thinking a bit deeper about what that time really meant to me. 20 years ago, I was putting in time doing what felt like pretty insignificant tasks. At the time, it was hard to see the value in all of it. I wasn’t the star player, I wasnt even a good player and I certainly wasn’t getting any playing time. But I showed up. I gave it my all, and in hindsight, that mattered more than I realized. Fast forward two decades, and I can confidently say that those moments—those seemingly small, unimportant tasks—played a huge role in shaping “today”. If I hadn’t participated in football or any other organized sports, there’s no way my business, Opulence Insurance Group LLC (which has now grown into insuring over 125 Pro Athletes), would even exist. The discipline, teamwork, and perseverance I learned during those years laid the foundation for the work ethic and mindset that have been critical to my success. It’s funny how life works like that. Sometimes, we go through periods where the things we are doing don’t seem to add up to much in the moment. We may not realize it at the time, but those seemingly insignificant tasks are setting the stage for something much bigger down the road. That’s one of the most amazing parts about life—the way the dots connect in ways you could never predict. So, here’s to those days on the field that seemed pointless at the time. They were far from meaningless. In fact, they were building the foundation for everything that came after. That’s the beauty of the journey of life — you never know which moments will end up being the most impactful until you look back years later.

We believe in conflict-free advice... this means if we go play golf with a rep from an investment company, we buy our own golf. We don't even accept their logo'd golf balls as a gift. We don't go on a free sales trip paid for by insurance companies if we sell 'x' amount of their life insurance in a year. We get paid in one way... by the client for our service. I think a super great opportunity for students and faculty to learn more about captive insurance. I learned about this industry through UVM Women in Business Club. The gist of the captive industry is companies create captives to help them get better premiums and insurance that fits their needs that isn't available on the market.
