The Three Guineas is a Grade II listed building designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. It was built in 1840, initially to serve as the central railway ticket office. Today, it houses a pub at the train station. Owner Fuller’s commissioned Thomann-Hanry® to carry out works of restoration to the façade and redecoration of all timber work including leadwork to the severely decayed clock tower. Due to location of the clock tower, and the length of time the job would require, it is one of the few times where we recommended the use of scaffolding. Subtle differences in materials create a sense of time and history in this building. In this - part renovation - part extension - the grouting in the masonry suggests the passing of time between the construction of the different volumes. Other details - like the plinth or the different roof tiles, further build on this effect but never reveal it at first glance.

BUILT TO LAST (A WAR OR 2..) Internal works have now commenced in earnest at our #Leicestershire #ResidentialConversion of a former #ConservationVillage pub and restaurant into 3 luxury dwellings. The first week of the new year has focussed on the removal of the existing masonry and timber ground floors with some surprising results. As the video shows, the ceilings of the existing cellars which span 2/3 of the building are formed in 200mm concrete with a matrix of supporting steels, effectively creating a 'bomb-proof' subfloor to the building. This is good news for the fire safety and sound insulation considerations and negates the requirement to remove the cellar ceilings before they can be treated accordingly. Conversions can certainly be 'like a box of chocolates' but it's reassuring in this case to expose just how robust construction could be pre World Wars I & II.
