Yet the only way to resolve shame is to talk about it" Brene Brown Yesterday's Rebellious Health newsletter is about some of the barriers and the stigma healthcare professionals experience when they too need help. For years I was my own worst enemy. Ashamed, burying and suppressing what I felt whilst wearing an effective mask at work so no one else would know, comparison-itis and internally feeling as though I was a failure for not thriving in the system. Letting go, leaning into vulnerability, breaking down these barriers and healing through 'rebellious' modalities that aren't mainstream in our healthcare system (but very much should be) has all been part of the long journey to where I am today. I'm passionately angry about what the healthcare system is doing to break so many caring and dedicated professionals. I'm worried about the exodus of clinicians. I believe there is a wealth of untapped creativity, innovation and ideas actively being suppressed. Rebellious Health is here to address these concerns with an innovative and disruptive idea that could reignite purpose, and reimagine a new healthcare ecosystem. So, let's consider: What steps will you take today to address the stressors, traumas, and losses that you've encountered not only on the job but before you even began your career? Instead of fixating on a potential psychiatric diagnosis, you can channel your efforts into fortifying your resilience. This can involve acknowledging the influence of early attachments and adverse childhood experiences on your current coping mechanisms, both in your personal and professional life, and how those experiences somatically got stuck in your body. Lots of people don't like talking about psychiatric disorders. So let's talk about something else. Did you know that approximately 20% of adults with lifetime suicide attempts don’t even meet the criteria for a psychiatric disorder diagnosis before their first attempt (Oquendo et al. 2024, JAMA Psychiatry)? Consider this: focus on your resilience; talk to someone about your strengths, your faith, and what you are most grateful for...stay positive. Jason M. Our health system could be much, much better today if we had listened more to disadvantaged health leaders of the late 19th century, and followed their example. And it still can be. After sitting down with Deborah Ortiz during the filming of “IS THERE SOMETHING GOING ON AT HOME?”, the realization of our research came to light. After assessing her husband, Michael’s, Fatal 10™ score, it occurred to me very quickly that Michael was probably a 9/10. The red flags were everywhere and had been for quite some time. The research shows that relationship issues were the leading issue noted and completed suicide in our research. This is where more time, energy, and money must be spent to help our first responders and their family members build, stronger bonds, recognize signs and symptoms of issues before problematic behaviors are noted, and build good communication skills so families know how to communicate effectively with their loved one, and those in charge of their care, and where to go should they need to seek out assistance for their loved ones or themselves. Our research shows that there is something going on at home. This should not be a secret. The stress and trauma alone from the job place, our first responders at risk. How they deal with this stress and trauma, and the stress of their daily lives, is also an issue. If our goal is to have happy, healthy, safe officers who serve our communities to the best of their abilities, then we have to change the outcome, we have to change what we are currently doing.
