New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced budget cuts that, if enacted, will essentially wipe out #communitycomposting infrastructure in #NYC, as well as threaten widely used #foodwaste drop-off sites operated by GrowNYC at Greenmarkets throughout the city. “NYC has long been a leader not only in #composting, but community composting … that keeps the composting process and #compost use local, while offering community engagement and education opportunities,” according to Institute for Local Self-Reliance. ILSR’s 2022 Community Composter Census identified New York as home to the largest concentration of community composters in the U.S.—a thriving ecosystem of local businesses, environmental nonprofits, and neighborhood gardens. #climate

CALLING WEEMS CREEK RESIDENTS: Severn River Association is holding a Community Meeting to discuss future restoration projects. Mark your calenders for Friday May 3 at the Annapolis Unitarian Universalist Church in Annapolis, 333 Dubois Rd, Annapolis 21401. Doors open 5:30pm, meeting will be 6-8pm. During this meeting: - SRA will give a brief presentation about the Severn River Action Plan and describe how we arrived at Weems Creek being the #1 priority for restoration. - Center for Watershed Protection will give a brief overview of the potential restoration projects in the Weems Creek watersheds that have been identified and vetted thus far. - We will be looking for feedback and input from community members. We will have a poster printout of the location and types of potential projects and will be looking to attendees to help us identify additional ways we can address stormwater and nutrient/sediment pollution. - We want to know where there are opportunities that residents will be able to interact with projects, whether that's passive like walking/driving past, incidental (like stopping to read an informational sign), or active (e.g. interest in volunteering to help with planting or maintaining the projects once constructed). Our Chief Director for Puerto Rico, Charlotte Gossett Navarro, discussed how local nonprofits have come to function as “community resiliency hubs” in response to extreme natural disasters brought on by climate change like Hurricanes Maria and Fiona, in a recent article in The Chronicle of Philanthropy, These local nonprofits serve as “one-stop-shops” for essential resources that are often made scarce by these weather events such as medication, clean water, and power. This transformation has been made possible in PR, in part by the numerous solar energy with battery systems installed since Hurricane Maria – including through initiatives like Solar Saves Lives, a previous collaboration between Hispanic Federation and partner organizations, to maximize the resilient rooftop solar energy potential of federally qualified health clinics across Puerto Rico, and dozens of other community solar initiatives funded by Hispanic Federation since 2017. “We can’t deploy solar energy quickly enough to make sure that every single person has consistent energy, [but] if you have a place within a reasonable distance that you can access power, that’s a way for us to address these needs in this transitional period.” Click below to read more: https://lnkd.in/gXn8AwEz

NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS!!!!!!! The second round of grantmaking for the Environmental Justice Data Fund (EJDF or “the Fund”) will be supported by a $4 million fund, created and seeded by Google.org. The EJDF aims to help frontline communities historically underserved and disproportionately impacted by climate change and environmental injustice in the United States use data to address environmental hazards, with special attention to matters regarding air and water quality. The Fund will support eligible organizations to unlock resources, increase their access to federal infrastructure funding, and advocate for new policies that empower communities to address past environmental harm and pave the way to a more sustainable, climate-resilient future. The new round of grantmaking was designed based on insights from the 2022 grantmaking cycle, which demonstrated a high need in the field to address environmental hazards, especially related to air and water quality. The fund remains dedicated to the principle that supporting data work will help advance justice and build power within local communities. By providing those most impacted by environmental injustices with valuable information, they are empowered to confront these issues and develop community-led solutions. The Fund will prioritize projects that serve frontline communities and consider a broad range of approaches to using data to advocate for environmental justice at the local and regional levels (please see below for how the Fund defines “frontline communities”, “environmental justice”, and “data” for this opportunity). It will provide organizations with flexible project funding to increase their organizational capacity to incorporate quality data work into their environmental and climate justice programming. The fund expects to make two to four grants of $500,000 and six to eight grants of $250,000. The Fund encourages grantees to leverage grant funds for matching opportunities, if applicable. Accepting that climate nonprofits only receive 2% of all philanthropy just cannot be accepted as the regular state of business. It's not enough to expand our collective impact. Nonprofits are THE groups that invite people in to be part of the change-making? It's through YOU - the 501c3 organization doing the work in cities and towns, states and communities where the impact is made - on the ground, in the lab, out on a boat, or in the classroom.
