📈 The 2024 Oscars ratings see its biggest viewership in 4 years 📈 Let's get into it:👇 🚀 Just over a week has passed but the numbers are in. According to Nielsen, Hollywood's biggest night was the most-watched network awards show since February 2020. Not bad, not bad. 🚀 The 96th annual Academy Awards ceremony totaled 19.5 million people watching and earned a 3.8 rating in the adults demographic aged 18-49, up from 18.8 million just a year ago but missed 2023's 4.0 rating assigned to the same group. 🚀 As you might expect, viewership peaked in the final half hour - which saw Ryan Gosling perform "I'm Just Ken" from the film "Barbie," and Cillian Murphy win best actor for "Oppenheimer," while Oppenheimer's director, Christopher Nolan, also took home best director honors. So how do these numbers compare to previous years? 🎥 Believe it or not, the Academy Awards was frequently the second most-watched television program of the year behind only the Super Bowl. That was until 2018 when the Oscars telecast had fallen under 30 million viewers for the very first time in its prestigious history. 🎥 Since its 2014 peak with 43.7 million watching, viewership of the Academy Awards has declined steadily to 26.5 million in 2018, then went back up to 29.6 million in 2019, and 23.6 million in 2020. The bottom fell out with the pandemic-diminished show in 2021, seen by a mere 9.85 million. Viewership rebounded in 2022 — the year of "the Slap" — with 16.6 million. Oh the slappp 👋. 🎥 Movies, actors & directors shouldn't take full blame for dwindling numbers either. Many analysts agree that the generational shift to streaming as well as other forms of media are responsible for gutting broadcast television viewership, with few live events other than the Super Bowl drawing the massive audiences they once did. #media #movies #oscars #oscar2024 #oppenheimer #barbie #hollywood #academyawards #streaming

Why isn’t Live dying as people predicted? For years people have expected ‘on demand’ to totally kill off live. The flexibility of consumption offering too much of a pull for audiences who live in a ‘now’ culture. But it just doesn’t seem to be happening. - The Traitors averaged 5.4 million live viewers each week - Super Bowl LVIII was the most watched live event in US TV history And we even see this translate on an everyday level, where Dizplai partner The United Stand go live to tens of thousands daily on a set schedule in the morning, afternoon and evening. I think the essence of live still taps into some inbuilt human traits. 👉 One part structure and habit 👉 One part shared experience 👉 One part audience engagement If you can consider the role human psychology makes in your live content, you’re on the road to success. #broadcast #sportsbiz #ott

Ever wondered how Hollywood's biggest night, the Oscars, made its swift TV debut in 1953? As we celebrate the triumphs at the Oscars today, let's rewind to 1953, the year Hollywood and television had a 'shotgun wedding'—a swift and unexpected union that forever changed the landscape of the Academy Awards. In the embrace of TV cameras and dazzling lights, the Oscars stepped onto the small screen, marking a transformative moment in the history of this iconic ceremony. With a budget of a quarter of a million dollars, the telecast of the 25th Academy Awards reached an astounding 34 million viewers. The infusion of TV cameras, zoomer lenses, and monitoring screens inside the venue signaled a seismic shift, ushering in a new era for the Oscars. The dazzling glamour of Hollywood's elite faced the unrehearsed gaze of television. In the subsequent years, television's impact deepened, with about 40 million viewers tuning in by the second year, broadcasted through channels like American Broadcasting Company (ABC), Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS), and National Broadcasting Company (NBC), becoming vibrant conduits to audiences. As the small screen brought stars closer to the audience, the Oscars evolved from a majestic spectacle to a more intimate, dynamic event. Today, the Oscars gracefully navigate the ever-changing media landscape, adapting to the era of streaming platforms and diverse media consumption. The challenge of retaining audiences becomes an exciting journey of innovation. This evolution reflects a constant effort to stay relevant and captivate the attention of a dynamic and fractured media landscape. Here's to the enduring influence of television on this iconic Hollywood affair. At MediaGuru, we embrace the positive transformations in media with every step. Who are the writers, producers, directors and studio heads that recognize the huge potential in creating movies and series for the 50+ audience? With actors and actresses over 50? There are some enlightened pioneers like Amy Baer and a few others like Ryan Murphy who just announced his new series Mid-Century Modern. (With Linda Lavin, Nathan Lane and others). And Susan Stroman who will produce Left on Tenth on Broadway. I’m happy to learn that my esquire story below on the topic is now part of some film/media studies curriculum. The first millennials turn 50 in six years. Maybe they will be the enlightened generation who lean into this idea as opposed to being age-phobic. By the way, it’s good for business. #ROAR into this big opportunity.
There's a Huge, Fast-Growing Audience That Hollywood is Ignoring

🎙️It's time for studios to adapt to the changing needs of audiences. Mass-produced big-budget movies are passé, especially if they lack authenticity. People want to be entertained but also want to connect with what they’re watching. Big-budget films are still viable, but they need to have good stories that resonate with viewers. Studios are competing with people's time. What is more enticing: two hours of scrolling on TikTok with authentic, genuine content (yup, that’s me), or spending time and money (on tickets, parking, snacks) to go to the theater? Consider the success of 'Barbie', a big budget film with great storytelling👉🎙️“The Memorial Day Box Office Meltdown.” Puck Lucas Shaw Matthew Belloni #Film #Media

➡️ “It’s really problematic. We are not merely troublesome we are in a red alert situation in many many markets and as politics gets more polarized we have to decide what we do about institutions.” I don’t know a lot about PBS but folks I’m talking with have been thinking about this issue for a while, especially with many of the social impact companies shutting down, like Participant and Topic Studios. Outside of high awareness factual or biopic based programs IMO it’s very hard to connect with new movies and shows that feel like they’re leading hard with their social political agendas. Do we double down on niche or find more creative (and authentic) ways to tell stories that connect us? Maybe show us what drives a character that we can all relate (or aspire) to; show us new ways to see classic plot structures before trying to change hearts and minds. I believe films like Dune and Civil War did this effectively. Same with Fallout series. I’m going to try to take the extra effort to see these things in theaters this summer or watch them on first weekend on streaming. #storytelling #challenge
