Didn't Think Answering Emails Could Be This Awesome! My Customer Support Adventures Who knew customer support could be such a wild ride? I started out thinking it was just about answering questions, but ternyata (Indonesian for "it turns out") it's so much more! Sure, there are technical troubleshooting moments, but the best part is getting to know the people behind the emails. Understanding their needs, calming them down when they're frustrated, and working together to find solutions - that's what makes it fun! Every interaction feels like a mini-quest to turn a frown upside down and create a customer who raves about our company. Pretty cool, right? What about you? Any hidden gem careers surprise you? Calling a couple of customer support teams recently has been a trying experience. On both occasions I got straight through to a person who listened to my query and passed me to the right person. My questions were answered. So why were those calls trying? Someone, somewhere decided that agents have to be friendly and gave them perky scripts. So for a good couple of minutes I had to bat off questions about my day (and when I said, I need to get back to work, about my job). It can be too much. It made me think of equality and equity. Equality is giving everyone the same thing. Equity is giving everyone what they need to achieve their goal. In Customer Experience Management, we should not treat all our customers the same. We should give them the experience they need. So, when you are training your customer facing teams, help them understand when perky is welcome and when efficiency would be preferred. My fastest time to customer contact so far? 1 minute. Sort of. Whenever I join a new team, I always race myself to see how quickly I can get in touch with real customers. I've only been at Stable a few weeks. On my second day, I met Austin McRobbie and expressed my interest to get on a customer call. It was 2:59pm and he responded, "I have a call in one minute. Want to join?" I shadowed the call, took lots of notes, and intently listened to an overworked HR rep discuss their need for operational stability (pun intended). Mission accomplished! I've been on several calls since then, and have another one in a few minutes. If you're craving more customer contact, it never hurts to ask. Happy designing!
