What do luck & Monopoly deal have to do with business? This week, whilst my son and I were in the thick of another “best to 5” monopoly deal play off… [side note: monopoly deal is like monopoly, but faster] Whilst we played… the following conversation ensued: Me: “I think you’re on a winning streak” [Let’s be real - he was winning by a long shot] Kidlet: “I think it’s just luck” [Clearly trying to be humble 😜] We were on game 5 of the morning, and he’d just surmised that it was just “luck of the hand you get”. But I disagreed. Yes, luck obviously has a lot to do with the initial hand, but it’s what you do with the cards you’re dealt - THAT is what’s important! Take some snippets from our games: —————————— // I waited one round before initiating my “big play”… and watched him pick up his cards + play out. I lost because of 1 move. // In another game, I played my hand too soon, and he took all of my property cards (and money). It put me on the backfoot. Finding just the right strategy for the game you’re in - is key! The funny thing is that in other games I had won - he’d said “if only you hadn’t taken my cards”, or “argh, I was one round out”! Haha So the two lessons I took away from monopoly deal: —————————— 📍Strategy (like monopoly deal) is all about working the best plan you can with the cards you’re dealt… it’s not all “luck”! 📍 Business is up and down, wins and losses… not luck. Do the best with what you have & keep working your strategy. I hear this all the time, "The price is too high" Let me tell you why that's not true. Barron is a huge Steph Curry fan. Steph plays for the Golden State Warriors and they are coming to town. So I looked into decent tickets. $750 for both of us. That doesn't include parking or anything.These aren't court side seats or anything but this is Steph Curry he commands the price. I thought to myself well if one game costs $750 then how much are season tickets? $30 Grand? So I went and looked Season tickets which include every home game, parking to every game, meeting the players with autographs and discounts on merchandise. Guess how much. $4,000 total for both of us and if we can't use the tickets they will buy them back from us if we can't make the game Well according to everyone who thinks the price is too high I should buy the $750 tickets right? I mean $750 is way less than $4,000 right? We can't even argue that. We want the lowest price right? What's the better deal? Every home game including the one with Steph Curry or just the one game for $750. Most people will say $4,000 is the better deal even though it is 433% more money. But, no no no. You said the price was too high. $4,000 is way more money So is the price too high or does it just not include enough value to command the price? That's always the problem. The price never too high, it just doesn't provide enough for the money. Don't lower the price, add more value. This works 100% of the time!!!

I'm grateful for the opportunity to appear on CNBC and chat with Contessa Brewer about the Ohtani sports betting saga. My takeaways: --> While the betting activity occurred exclusively in the illegal market, there will be implications for the legal sports betting market. --> Those implications will likely come in the form of increased demands from state and federal regulators for tracking, reporting, and general transparency around money movement for high-value or high-volume accounts. --> Federal regulation via legislation focused on marketing restrictions, consumer protection, etc, remains quite unlikely; federal intervention via Treasury/FinCEN is all but inevitable. --> Most betting-adjacent crimes (theft, money laundering, etc.) take place in illegal gambling markets, meaning that it's imperative for policymakers to support a robust and viable market for legal gambling. --> Bonus that I didn't get to cover in my comments: The winners of increased scrutiny are the third-party companies (such as Kinectify, GeoComply, Xpoint, and Gaming Laboratories International, LLC) that can help the FanDuels and DraftKings Inc. of the world mitigate the impact of increased regulatory scrutiny. --> While not *net* winners, the operators best positioned to absorb the increased costs and friction from additional regulatory scrutiny are those who sit most squarely at the intersection of "largest" and "most experienced with federal scrutiny."
