A Love for the Past, Shaping the Future
Many have noticed a consistent thread throughout Xperiencemakers' 25-year portfolio – a deep appreciation for heritage. This wasn't a singular project that sparked this love, but rather an organic evolution throughout my design career.
Early on, like most designers, I took on a variety of projects, from commercial to corporate spaces. While I value this experience and the design principles I honed during that time, I was drawn to something more – spaces with longevity and a story.
A wine farmer's words once resonated deeply with me: "he loves all things old because old can never get old." This perfectly encapsulates my design philosophy – respecting the past while propelling it forward.
Interestingly, the world of heritage design found me, rather than the other way around. Initially, my experience was in more commercial, almost sterile corporate environments. But as I delved into heritage projects, a passion ignited. It was a gradual awakening, a discovery of my design "love language," as you might say.
This doesn't diminish the importance of more commercial design. However, for me, there's a unique thrill in merging history with the future, creating spaces that are sensitive to both.
I'm grateful for the journey that led me here, and I'm excited to continue exploring the possibilities through heritage design at Xperiencemakers.

Placemaking isn't simply about physical structures, it's about weaving a compelling narrative that resonates with authenticity and engagement. As designers, we are not just shaping the built environment, but also influencing the experiences of its users.

L.A. artist Darel Carey uses electrical tape, a knife, and a ladder to warp our sense of space.
His art makes you pause, step back, and question what you’re seeing.
But how can art help your brand?
➡️ Want to step into another dimension? Carey’s work invites you in.
Carey taps into liminality—designing spaces that disconnect from the usual and invite deeper engagement. Inspired by MC Escher’s geometric illusions, his lines and patterns transform surfaces, creating environments that demand attention.
Takeaways for brands and spaces:
🧠Visually intriguing spaces increase emotional engagement and time spent in-store (Environment and Behavior study).
🧠Unique visual elements stimulate the brain, enhancing mood and memory (Journal of Environmental Psychology).
🧠When a space feels distinct and unexpected, visitors are more receptive to the brand’s message.
Imagine retail, dining, or hospitality environments that intrigue, engage, and linger in memory.
Spaces that challenge perception also capture attention and build lasting connections.
Ready to rethink your environment?
