Thank you David for shedding light on the controversy surrounding Black Myth: Wukong, developed by the Chinese studio Game Science. Somehow, all these articles slipped past me, but this one (Wukong Dev’s Apparent Attempt to Hide Its Sexist Past, that David shared) is particularly illuminating. While it's incredibly sad to read stories like this, I'm glad that light is being shone on these issues. I believe video games have the potential to be powerful tools for social change. Especially for the localities that need it most. The dim and grim restrictions reflect a pattern of censorship rooted in China's governance and cultural norms, which often resist social progress. While this perpetuates the broader issue of sexism and political interference in the gaming industry, it is especially tied to China's unique cultural and political landscape. Similar to the creator of Tetris, who had little control over his game's market treatment, Chinese developers face significant constraints in how their products are presented and discussed. While it might seem easy to shift blame onto the developers, their publishers, or the government, the reality is far more complex. It's difficult to pinpoint exactly who should be responsible for enacting change. Perhaps the story of Tetris could repeat itself in the Chinese market, where the belief of one person (Henk Rogers) in another's creation (the developer of Tetris Alexey Pajitnov) had changed the world. Although every person and party had a role to play, the driving force was the collective experience of Tetris as something truly engaging and that would transform how people interact with technology. Henk Rogers was this driving force, spreading the collective experience where it needed it go. Though, I believe real change in this instance of Black Myth: Wukong would require grander shifts in both Chinese governance and cultural attitudes toward gender, censorship, and creative freedom. Maybe not something that could be achieved with one game or one persons effort alone. What do you think?
