We getting sidewalks! My team and I have been working in partnership with the community members of Alton, a historically black underserved community on revitalizing the area. A key priority for the residents were to add sidewalks for the kids and elderly to walk the neighborhood. Last night alongside St. Tammany Parish government we were able to notify the community that they will be getting sidewalks added to their main street that all other streets intersect. THIS IS PROGRESS! CELEBRATE THE WINS! We are very aware of the potential benefits and drawbacks of revitalization in underserved neighborhoods. We are being intentional about the strategies we implement to ensure that the process is inclusive and equitable for all residents. Things that make my team rise to start a new day: 1. Economic Growth 2. Increased Property Values 3. Improved Infrastructure 4. Community Pride 5. Access to Services Things that keep my team up at night: 1. Gentrification 2. Displacement 3. Loss of Cultural Identity 4. Limited Affordability 5. Resistance to Change History of the community: The Alton Neighborhood began its development around 1880, after the end of the Civil War (1865). With the Victory of the Union, many Black Families were now free from slavery and anxious to become independent landowners. They were able to purchase lands in Alton through the Homestead Law which was passed in 1862. This allowed residents and future citizens to purchase up to 160 acres of public land for a small registration fee and agreed to live and improve the land for 15 years. After 15 years, the properties were registered with the United States Department of Interior (1894). Although the core development of Alton Neighborhood was due to Black Families, the lands owned by Black Families were not registered on the St. Tammany Parish Books until 1937. Today, as we commemorate Patriot Day, we honor and remember the lives tragically lost on September 11, 2001. This solemn anniversary reminds us of the resilience, bravery, and spirit of unity that define us as Americans. Whether you have a personal memory of that day or know its impact through the stories of others, we hope you’ll join us in pausing to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy and the community we cherish. Author & Anti-Racist Content Creator grounded in Higher Education Equity, Democracy, NonViolence and NonStealing. I imagine a USA where race no longer predicts outcomes.
🎯 Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott Nails IT! 🎯 The assault on DEI is really an assault on ➡ D Duly ➡ E Elected ➡ I Incumbents - (Black people and "others" who exercise their rightful place in a democratic republic to represent the people) and, by extension, the right of any Black person to enjoy the rights and privileges of citizenship in an aspirational United States of America where race no longer predicts outcomes. Blackness (which doesn't know its place) triggers whiteness since whiteness presumes a plantation white entitlement to control the location of its property. This is the 🌟 Presumption of Whereabouts Authority 🌟 as I teach in #12swa Twelve Steps for White America. PWA illustrates a commodification of Blackness as a means to sustain the profit of rigged advantage. (Think carceral state from fugitive slave patrols to for-profit prisons, Karens, and minority rule including electoral college, senate, SCOTUS). To the colonized and conditioned white mind, when this happens, it triggers a threat to the existence of whiteness itself, since whiteness was and remains a colonial American construction (an inclusion-collusion-delusion) to sustain rigged advantage, which can only persist through white supremacy and anti-Blackness. 🙏🏼 Mayor Scott's teaching here can lead to truth reconciliation and renewal. White America (including white Americans) needs to work a program of recovery for a USA where race no longer predicts outcomes. #democracy #highereducation #diversity #DEI Three-Fifths Magazine Marjorie A. Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott hit back at the racist right wing attacks against him following the Key Bridge collapse for “having the nerve to be Black and also a mayor.” “What they mean by DEI, in my opinion, is duly elected incumbent.” 🔥🔥🔥 Mayor Scott did not mince any words and I’m here for it ✊🏾

Darity Jr, W., & Mullen, A. K. (2020). Resurrecting the promise of 40 acres: The imperative of reparations for Black Americans. Roosevelt Institute. THE CASE WE MAKE FOR BLACK REPARATIONS IN THE UNITED STATES CENTERS ON THE PROVISION OF COMPENSATION FOR A SPECIFIC COMMUNITY THAT CONSISTS, TODAY, OF APPROXIMATELY 40 MILLION AMERICANS. Some reparations commentators are concerned that money is not enough, but we believe that money is exactly what is required to eliminate the black-white wealth gap—the most glaring indicator of racial injustice in America. Ultimately, respect for black Americans as people and as citizens—and acknowledgment, redress, and closure for the history and financial hardship they have endured— requires monetary compensation. #reparationsnow #debt #America #owes #bhm2024

Malcolm X's childhood Inkster house gets $80K from the state of Michigan to finish rehab. Not many know the house where Malcolm X once lived, is in Inkster. An $80,000 grant will help restore the house and preserve an important piece of the story of an American Black hero! We need to preserve Black history, NOT destroy it! 'We hear so many accounts of these CSEs suddenly being dropped by funders, requirements for funding become ludicrously hard by target Black organisations specifically, and agreed payment dates suddenly get shifted leaving leaders in the lurch. If we want to contribute to society in a way that uplifts, and impacts, then we need to be brave enough to look beyond today and go beyond what is easy to do and what is needed to change the system.'
