These are a few things that helped me in clearing the industrial training interview. 📍Know the Role You’re Applying For – Be clear about the responsibilities and expectations of the role. Understanding the job’s requirements and how your skills align with the position will give you a stronger foundation. 📍Know Your CV Inside Out – Your CV is your best asset. Be ready to discuss your experience in detail with confidence. 📍Craft a Memorable Introduction – First impressions matter! Prepare a concise yet impactful introduction that sets a positive tone for the rest of the interview. 📍Leverage Your Articleship Experience – Showcase your understanding of the work you've done during your articleship. Explain your role, responsibilities, and the value you contributed. 📍Research the Company – Learn about the company’s operations, products, and the industry landscape. For example, the UBS-CS merger in my case gave me an edge during my interview. 📍Connect with Other Interns – Reaching out to people who already work there, like fellow interns, can provide invaluable insights into what the interview might focus on. I did this, and it really helped! 📍Brush up your knowledge – Strengthen your knowledge of FR, especially IND AS 110, 103, 109, 116, 115, and AFM, including the basics of derivatives and valuation models. 📍Confidence & Clarity – Speak with clarity and confidence, particularly when discussing your expertise or interest. 🌟 Reflecting on the first six months of 2024 🌟 2024 started off with unexpected challenges. On January 1st, I woke up sick and had to rush back to India for surgery. Despite informing HR about my health and even emailing from my hospital bed, I faced ghosting from a top company after reaching the final interview stage. February and March brought brighter days as I embarked on an amazing consulting internship at Monytri. I gained invaluable experience, honed my valuation and IB skills through various webinars, and juggled university commitments. April was filled with learning and growth during my selection for the Citi Early Insight Days, where I refined my interview skills and absorbed essential industry knowledge. May was intense with finals season and a final stage interview for a placement at Lloyds Banking Group. The 7th of May is unforgettable - I requested the university to shift my accounting exam to the morning, attended the ASOS.com final stage assessment center for 5 hours, reaching the top 20 out of 400 candidates. Despite my efforts, faced rejection from two of my dream companies. However, I received constructive feedback and appreciation for my strong potential, which I cherish deeply. June brought another final stage interview, getting selected in the top 6 candidates out of 200 for the world’s biggest energy company and an offer for a Valuations & Modelling Summer Intern role at EY. I also got selected for the Rise in Banking program by Lloyd’s Banking Group, but had to decline due to an internship clash. Despite facing rejections from some of the best companies, reaching their final interview stages has been a transformative experience. The constructive feedback I received has been invaluable, highlighting my strengths and areas for improvement. Leaving those interview rooms, I felt more assured in my capabilities and more determined than ever to achieve my career goals. These six months have been a journey of growth, resilience, and hard work. I’ve achieved top-notch results in my academics (a solid distinction in all modules), improved my time management skills, and mastered multitasking. Currently, I’m engaged in the valuation of one of India’s biggest NBFCs and looking forward to what the rest of 2024 holds. I got REJECTED from 300+ jobs before I landed a job at KPMG UK. I moved to the UK in 2016 for an undergraduate degree at the University of Bath. For the first year of applying for jobs, I never received a call back (forget an interview). I was technically GHOSTED for 100+ job applications. I felt worthless. I then changed 2 things which got me my dream job at KPMG: 1️⃣ I learnt how to deal with rejection I stopped taking rejections personally, or thinking it was because I'm not British. Instead, I learnt from rejections. I started believing Rejection = Re-direction. 2️⃣ I understood that Quality beats Quantity I realised that it's NOT a numbers game (despite all your friends telling you to apply for 100+ jobs per day). → 5 High-Quality applications are better than 50 applications → Tailored CV + Cover Letter always beats Generic CV + Cover Letter. It took me 2 years to learn these 2 lessons and in June 2018, I decided to ONLY apply for Audit roles at the Big 4. This meant I hyper-targeted my efforts to ONE role at only 4 companies.. That's how targeted I was. In July and August 2018, I made 4 job applications to KPMG, EY, PwC and Deloitte, and got two assessment centre invites (KPMG and PwC). In October 2018, I received an offer from KPMG London for a Graduate Trainee role to start in September 2019. I got a job offer as a Pakistani international student at the young age of 20.... this was 9 months BEFORE graduating. I was the same guy who spent 3 months handing out my CV across the city of Bath (I eventually did land a part-time job at Papa John's) If I can do it, so can YOU. Since then I have helped 100s of international students from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia and many other countries avoid the mistakes I've made. Reflecting on a Decade of Growth!! As I look back when I graduated exactly a decade back, I was a student with an average personality and a slightly above-average performance in academics. It used to be a dreadful feeling thinking if I would. ever get a decent job and the feeling got further accentuated when I got rejected in the first round for a base-level audit job at E&Y (one among multiple other job interviews I gave), which almost all my fellow colleagues made it through. That rejection was a pivotal moment for me, allowing me to build a foundational mentality to not give in to failures, introspect on changes I need to make and how just simple academics won't cut it off for me. Fast forward a decade, I had a chance to work in investment banking (my dream sector after I decided what to do after that failed EY interview), co-found and build a startup and work with a prominent Indian cricket franchise, the work career that would have been my wildest imagination back in 2014. Although suffered multiple adversities and failures, I am truly grateful for the choices I made, the lucky breaks I got and the people I had an opportunity to work with. I recently had the opportunity to intern as a concurrent auditor at Anand Rathi Share and Stock Brokers Ltd, one of India's leading financial services firms. Over the course of one month, I gained valuable insights into the world of stock broking and compliance. As a concurrent audit intern, my primary role was to ensure that the firm's operations and transactions adhered to regulatory guidelines laid down by SEBI (Securities and Exchange Board of India) and stock exchanges. This involved: 💻 Reviewing client registrations, KYC processes, margin trading, and other critical functions to identify any gaps or non-compliances. 📝 Examining trading logs, contract notes, client ledgers and fund transfer reports to verify the integrity of transactions. One of the biggest takeaways was understanding the paramount importance of compliance in the capital markets. Even a minor lapse could potentially lead to penalties, reputational damage and erosion of customer trust. I'm grateful to my supportive mentors who guided me through complex regulations and processes. Their insights into emerging trends like algo-trading and regulatory tech were invaluable. This internship reinforced my interest in financial compliance and auditing.
